ordinarily for mobiles i would suggest using IMAP4, it's more suited to mobile email as messages are left on the server and just marked as read. gmail does things a little differently, but imap is still your best bet. it's more effective than pop3 because pop3 needs to connect every so often to check for mail where as imap can stay connected and instantly check for new mail and not use any data in the mean time.

you need to enable imap in the gmail settings - 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'

the settings are as follows
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - requires SSL: imap.googlemail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.googlemail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587
Account Name: your Google Mail username (including @googlemail.com)
Email Address: your full Google Mail email address (username@googlemail.com)
Password: your Google Mail password

as the ports are none standard you may need to go in after you have used the wizard and do some fine tuning.

you can use the gmail app. it's certainly simpler. but you need to leave it running in order for it to check for mail.

it's much better from my POV to use the internal mail client on the phone.
