Trouble with TomTom One XL
Is anyone having problems with this satnav? We use ours fairly infrequently but when it is used it can lose all the satelites and refuse to lock on to any. Getting it to work again can be a bit hit and miss; sometimes switching off and then back on some ten minutes later or other times is needs a hard reset.
When the signals are lost the strength just prior to the failure is a full five bars. We also have a built-in satnav (and use both!); the other one never loses the signal except in a tunnel so I'm confident it's not a simple problem of not being able to see satelites. When looking at the status screen satelites can be seen as grey bars, they can temporarily go blue to indicate the satnav has locked on then they go grey again. This unit is just less than twelve months old. Perhaps it requires a firmware update or replacement?

If you plug it into your computer and update it I believe it updates where the satellites are going to be over the next week and when you turn it on it locks onto them much quicker. Worth a try.

Some car windscreens can partially block satellite signals. The built in sat-nav doesn't have that problem because it's aerial is mounted outside (probably).
The only way to test this is to see how well the TomTom locks on to the satellites outside the car. Basically let it lock onto the signal outside the car and see what happens to the signal bars when you bring it into the car. If they drop quickly and go gray then chances are your car is blocking the signal. |

I'm not sure it's the windscreen; the signal is almost constantly five bars. When it locked up I shoved it through the open sunroof and this had no affect. The car is a Honda CR-V and the satnav hasn't locked up in a Vauxhall Zafira when we hired one for a week so it does make me wonder though.

I got a TomTom One XL v3 with RDS TMC traffic receiver and use it once in a while if im going out of town and have not had many problems with it. I downloaded the latest map for the my top top just last week for £38 and find its already a month or two out of date on a drive to Falkirk For a new slip road just outside Falkirk is marked as an unmarked road on the new top Top map I downloaded last week but apart from that that it did get me and my sister to where we wanted to go in Falkirk.

Heated windscreens are a favourite. Though I never had any problems with a Ford Focus I had with heated windscreen. If you are moving when it loses lock then it can take a while to find the signal again. It is almost always quicker to lock when stationary. Though that might not be an option when bombing down lane 3 of the motorway!

I'm using a OneXL as well, starting a few days ago it's having tremendous trouble finding a signal-- upwards of 5-6 minutes. Not sure what the issue is, I've downloaded GPS QuickFix, but still having trouble finding sats. Don't fret, its not just your unit
