Music Piracy!
Be honest, how many of you on here downloads music illegally from those blogspot sites or elsewhere on the net?
Why do Google, Rapidshare, Sendspace, Megaupload and the like make it SO hard to report copyright theft? Recently I came across a blogspot which was blatantly sending links to download albums for free. They had links to thousands of albums and it was not on. I reported a few of the links to the sites they were hosted on (sendspace, megaupload, rapidshare) needless to say that the only one's interested in battling piracy was rapidshare. The other sites replied by saying ''if you're not the copyright owner then we can't do anything'' which is absolutely ridiculous. Same with Google. I reported the blogspot using the abuse report form and they said the same, that I could only make a complaint if I was the copyright owner... Anyway, I found a load of albums that were owned by EMI so I reported the site again to Google claiming I was a representative of EMI and they literally shut the blogspot down within 24 hours... It's like Google, Megaupload and the like are almost promoting music theft. I can understand if the copyright is owned by the record company but what about those artists who own all their own copyrights and work from their own labels? Basically, they have to spend hours trawling the net trying to find illegal download links to their material because ''only they'' can report it.. Anyway, this is the site I had closed down http://gimmesomesoulfood.blogspot.com and of the 10 or so links I reported to Rapidshare, Megaupload and Sendspace, this is the only link that got removed. It hasnt been removed yet though, it's been put on hold http://rapidshare.com/files/21202909..._MusCitySo.zip Who else agrees that copyright abuse should be made much more easier for people to report? Or do most of you think 'fu*k it, just download it and stop complaining' ? |

There's no point, people will just set up again elsewhere. I suppose if they could shut down the pirate bay, that'd make a difference, but that won't happen.

Maybe if reporting abuse was made more accessible and easier for people to do it would decrease the problem.. I'm not saying it'd ever go but you could certainly cut it right down but right now there is just no regulation.. I reckon google should stick a button on EVERY blogsite which says ''report abuse'' so all you had to do was click it. As it goes, you have to google how to report it and then go through about 5 links to do so which is complicated. Then when you finallly do it, they tell you to go away anyway.. I just think it's not right and totally unfair that people are stealing things so rampantly online and it's just seems to be okay and normal |

Well I download singles unless i'm a really big fan of the artist and want them to do well in the charts, then ill buy it, but I always buy their album. There are some blogs that I use and downloads songs that will never be released and are all unknown people. Most are American singers and there's no other way to get their stuff.

I do feel bad if I ever have to download a singers album though. For example an rnb singer called The-Dream released his album about a month ago and I couldnt get hold of it. It was on Amazon but they charged £20 because it was an import. Just far too much to pay I think, so I downloaded it illegally.

I care actually! I agree that the music industry is greedy but that's the fault of the record companies, not the artists themselves.. They suffer far more than the record comapnies do and it's wrong

I only download illegally when there's a leak and I can't wait to hear it. I buy everything physically. It costs so much more, but I have a thing for physical albums and singles.

The OP - Why are you "reporting" it? Are you some kind of Uber-Spoilsport? Get a life, man.

I don't download music, I haven't got as far as owning an ipod or mp3 player yet.
I'm not condoning it either, but what is the OP's interest in this? Or are you just an internet vigilante OP? |

Artists make more money through touring and merchandise than they do through sales of singles/albums so it's only the record companies you are ripping off.

They only make more money through touring because album sales are so low these days though!

Thats not true, ticket sales and the price of tickets are both up (or at least they were up until the recession).
It's not hard to figure out. |

Yes, that's because album sales are so low these days that artists are forced to concentrate on touring and as they need more income they have put the prices of tickets up.
It's not hard to figure out. |

I think the OP needs to stop being a total fool. It doesn't make a jot. People will always upload albums and people will downlod them. having idiots reporting them, because they believe artists are starving is laughable.
Someone needs to get out from behind his desk and seriously get a life. |

I'm also of the opinion that Ferrari tries to rip of consumers. It's not a valid argument for taking a Ferrari and not paying for it.
• when downloading copyrighted material, you're making a duplicate on your 'puter. The original remains in the same location as it did before you downloaded a copy. • when stealing a Ferrari, you're actually making off with the 'master copy', leaving an empty space where it used to be. I download stuff here and there, but in my case its usually rare/hard-to-find/out of print stuff, which I view as an adjunct to my 'main' music collection of thousands of vinyl albums and CDs (a collection which is expanding at a wallet-shredding rate ).I've never paid for an mp3 and I have no intention of doing so. This is not because I get a kick out of getting stuff for free, but because I'm uncomfortable with the notion of paying money for a media delivery format that doesn't physically 'exist'. Furthermore, if an mp3 is encoded at a bitrate of less than 320 kbps It's going to be inferior in quality to both vinyl and CD, and unfortunately the majority of commercially available mp3s are still being encoded at a paltry 128-192 kbps. Sometimes I'll download an album, usually by way of auditioning it before deciding whether to buy the actual article or not. If I don't fancy the album I bin the download (I do a lot of music/video editing, and hard drive space is at a premium, so any extraneous files cannot be tolerated). home taping didn't kill music, and neither will downloading. |
