I've been wondering this all series! I've found her accent really hard to place. At times, it sounded like she could be from somewhere in Africa, but on other occasions, her accent seemed decidedly British.

Anyone know for certain?

I read on Teletext that she was born in Karachi which is Pakistan isn't it?

She's intriguing. Her surname is Lewis, but that might be from marriage, or just an old colonial name; or she may have chosen it. In Tanzania, an educated person would probably speak English on top of Swahili and perhaps another language. Mona's looks struck me as Asian at times, though not so much her lips, and there is a large Indian diaspora in east Africa. Also in east Africa is an old ethnic influence from Indonesia, and even an Arabic influence. I couldn't place her at all, and my first guess was that she was from the Seychelles or Mauritius. She is gorgeous, though, and I think she'd be able to sell me anything, whereas I'd walk away from the more pushy ones.

She said on You're Fired she's only lived in Kent for four years.

Yes, she has a rich ethnic backround - very mixed. I too can see both Black African and Asian in her looks.

Conflicting reports

`The Karachi-born former beauty queen said that if she had won the competition she would not have uprooted son Ryan, six, to move to London.`

Perhaps she was born in Pakistan but moved to Tanzania

I think she is of Tanzanian origin and was just born in Pakistan. Or maybe she has a Pakistani parent? Mona is a popular name in Pakistan, but its a kind of universal name anyway. She has a very intriguing look about her.

She doesn't look at all Pakistani or even vaguely Asian. To me she looks African and her accent although changeable at times seemed very South African a lot of the time.

she said that she spoke 6 languages, so i guess she's well travelled

People , if you are well travelled its clear to see that she is Tanzanian and she has no Asian Pakistani mix. Her light skin/eyes comes from the Middle eastern influence as their traders that once travelled that region. Consequently , Tanzania is a muslim country.

Her name Mona, pronounced Muna in the Middle East also further suggests she is Tanzanian and possibly Muslim.

Her many languages probably include various different African dialects.

oh, and she probably holds British citizenship anyway, lets face it its not hard to obtain so i suppose u cd also say she's british.

Her looks are doubtless African but if you understand these things you can see the Karachi influence pushing out but only from certain angles and only on certain features such as the ears and nostril tone.
However, that being said there are some overtones of Northern Frankish in the dialect which may indicate a relative from Central Germany or Eastern France in the past.
It is also possible that native Indians from Southern Chile are involved in certain words she pronounces with a typically Mochuquan dialect and the looks cannot be ignored.

Mona is a black girl of East African parentage. I agree though, that her accent seems to vary alot.

I wonder if this gives much insight:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1869876.stm

Quote:
“One of the Pakistan's smallest ethnic communities is made up of people of African origin, known as Sidi.

The African-Pakistanis live in Karachi and other parts of the Sindh and Baluchistan provinces in abject poverty, but they rarely complain of discrimination.”

I like the way she pronounces her name Monna.

When clearly Moana was nearer the truth.

Her accent bugged the hell out of me at times. She looks very east African.
