I have recently purchased a 'new' mobile from the Ora*** shop. I have only given my new number out to 2 people. I am receiving calls from different area codes. When I phoned Ora*** they agreed to change my number and then said 'that is the problem with re conditioned phones!

Thought I had bought a new one! For £25 a month and a basic tariff I am not really happy.

Has as anyone any advice? I am stuck in a contract for 12 months and not able to change my phone

Orange do send out reconditioned phones when they replace a handset under Orange Care. They also do sell reconditioned handsets on their website.

I have never heard of Orange Retail giving reconditioned handsets with new contracts, when you got your handset was it in the original packaging with all the leads, charger etc?
If it was and looks ok and works as it should personally I wouldn't care.

This makes no sense at all.

Your phone number is dependant on the SIM not the phone. You wouldn't be given a second hand used SIM card. That's just stupid. Even if the phone was reconditioned you wouldn't be getting calls from the previous owner's contacts without their SIM.

Someone at Orange is an idiot.

Sounds like your number has been released before but usually there is a time limit before the number is put back into service.

alternative is that someone has been giving out your number instead of their own ... seen it happen to a few people when they get their own number wrong by a digit (or swapping 2 numbers around).

you only get a call if someone calls your number. if i gave you my old handset you wouldn't get my calls would you.

if it's a new number it may be that it hasn't been rested for long enough in between someone giving it up and it being issued to you.

this is nothing to do with it being a reconditioned phone or not.

No phones sold in retail are reconditioned, some boxes maybe opened to inspect the contents and possibly demonstrate the capabilities but beyond that it is sold as New. More over when we process a phone through enable the boxed handset is already semi activated in that it is already allocated a number to the sim card and this clearly displayed on the side of the box.

However when the numbers are pre allocated by head distribution in banbury they are merely removed from the number allocation pool so they can't be used. The handsets aren't fully activated and useable till they leave the shop......but I can assure you phones you purchase from Orange retail are not reconditioned......

So the person on the phone is talking bollox, conversely even when recon handsets are sold via the website their data on system is reset and they are sent with a new sim card and number......
