Virgin Mobile have just said they are increasing their PAYG tariff to 20p per minute for a call, against 15p per minute for the first 5 minutes, and then 5p a minute thereafter. They are also, for the first time, introducing a 20p per call voicemail retrieval charge - this absolutely sucks, as my American comrades would say. Free voicemail was one of the major attractions to Virgin Mobile.

Would anyone care to recommend a PAYG tariff that would be competitive with the new Vermin Mobile tariff, and preferably include free voicemail retrieval? I've already sussed out T-Mobile's deal which seems similar to Virgin's, with 10p per minute for voicemail retrieval and 3 with free voicemail, but everyone I know with 3 complains about their coverage (or lack of it)

Many thanks for any suggestions

ASDA mobile is a good deal unless you are a heavy user (and would thus benefit from call/text bundles)
8p/min calls and 4p texting. Calls to 0800/0845 etc are also charged at 8p/min - the only network to do this i believe.

Vodafone Freedom Packs allow Voicemail against the mins allowance i think.

£10 Pack includes 300 texts and 100 mins
Which i think would cost you £50 on virgin.

I agree with your thoughts exactly!
They certainly have taken a step in the WRONG direction, in my opinion anyway

Are Virgin forcing everyone on to the new Addict tariff then? Got a Virgin Mobile Sim in the car just for emergencies, nothing about being forced onto the new tarif on that (text messages sent to the phone ect), it's still on the old Daily Bonus tarrif, just checked by ringing 789, nothing being said about being forced on to the new tariff on 789 either?

I got a text about a week ago, and checked the website, which seemed to suggest this was the only PAYG tariff. Rang their South African call centre and they said, yes, EVERYONE is being switched over on June 1st 2009

Oh right, looks like throwing that sim in the bin then and using Asda Mobile as the cars emergency phone! As others have said, big mistake from Virgin Mobile.

It's like Virgin have looked at O2 and Orange pay and go free text offerings and decided they want a piece of the action... Even Vodafone are in on it now with Text Unlimited (never thought i'd see that coming)

I don't like the sound of this at all. I'm on Virgin Pay Monthly, which (as far as I know) isn't changing.

My mum and dad are both on Virgin PAYG though, and I don't think they'll be very happy with the price increases. Especially since Virgin to Virgin texts used to be just 3p!

it wont be changing on contract or for people who stay on the old pay as you go tariff its just for the new pay as you go one.

Hi Chris,

Are you sure? It's just that their website only shows this new addict tariff as being the only PAYG available.

TIA.

She's still 'on the old one' because the new charging regime doesn't start until the 1st of June 2009. I specifically asked the callcentre about this, and they confirmed ALL PAYG customers will be transferred to the new tariff, whether new or not. They can, unfortunately, do this, so long as they give sufficient notice.

All contracts are free voicemail, yes, but this is not about contract phones - the thread title is "Search for a new PAYG tariff"

Thanks riceuten. If this is the case I suspect me (and lots of other Virgin PAYG customers will be looking at moving to someone else, ASDA mobile maybe?
