There has been some stuff in the papers lately that actually say that these do have benefits - so what are the best ones?
Here is a guide from the evil daily Mail.

• PROBIOTIC drinks and supplements are better than yoghurts as they contain more friendly bacteria. But beware, some probiotic drinks are full of sugar. More than 10g per 100g is considered high, so if you're diabetic or watching your sugar intake, it's best to opt for a pill.

• LOOK for products containing both bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. They don't play vastly different roles, but taken together they promise a better bacterial hit.

Also check the label for prebiotics (edible fibres that help pre-existing healthy gut flora to flourish); you'll need at least 5g prebiotics a day for a real effect.

Prebiotics will be listed on the label as inulin or fructo-oligosaccharides. If you're prone to diarrhoea or bloating, don't take prebiotic-laden formulations without professional advice.

• MAKE sure the probiotic dose is high enough; you need at least ten million live micro- organisms. Reputable probiotics will list the strain and number of live microorganisms on the label - most of the drinks available in the supermarket will have around this amount. Always consume refrigerated drinks before the expiry date as they're likely to become ineffective.

• YOU need to take your probiotics every day to see the benefit - it's no good leaving days in between having them, whether you're taking them short term or for longer.

• DO YOUR research. Probiotics are food supplements, so they can't make medical claims.

Whatever happened to just eating a normal healthy diet, along with exercise?

I reckon they are only good for people who have to take antibiotics.

I've been taking these for around 2 weeks (cheap in Tesco's) and have felt no different - seem to be a waste of money

I've posted about these before. I've suffered terribly with irritable bowel for years, it was on my doctors advice 2 nearly 3 years ago that he suggested a pre/pro biotic drink every day for me. I was very sceptical but I have to say that I can now count the attacks I've had on one hand, when I was living with constant attacks, before the pre/pro biotics I've not changed anything else in my diet so for me they work and I know lots of other sufferers who swear by them.
Also interestingly if my hubbie or my kids get the runs I always fill them up with pre/pro biotics and their recovery time is always much quicker.

There's no real scientific proof these work.
Squirtsmum- you may well be benefiting from a placebo effect?

Big waste of money IMO!

Did they say which brands had all the things they were advising to look out for?

There's an odd attitude on this site towards supplements.
