TAG Heuer has released a sleek new edition of its Meridiist mobile phone, inspired by the brand`s Grand Carrera watch and finished in black PVD; an incredibly fine coating applied through ionisation in a temperature-controlled room which is almost impossible to scratch. The fabricated back cover can be customised in alligator or calfskin leather in a choice of black, white or red. A diamond-encrusted edition is also available, should you wish to become a girl`s best friend.

Anyone who looks at sites like gsmarena will know that this isn't an expensive phone at all. Doesn't compete with the phone made from sheets of cleeved sapphire with platinum buttons, the cost of which would buy 100 of these wannabe TAG phones. Or solid gold and hand sawn walnut veneer.

I dont think anyone would risk taking it out the house if they know they will be getting drunk.

take away 2000% of that price and that's how much it costs to make.

Exactly the same could be said for the TAG watches, Rolexs, etc. Its a premium product. Which will obviously command a premium price.

I really don't see why people are so hung up on such products - so what, its expensive. no-one is telling you to go out and buy one!

It looks awful as well and I don't think the Vertu phones are anything special. Why are the Vertu phones that expensive anyway?

Primarily the quality of components.

Vertu use considerably higher quality components for virtually everything - key switches, case, screen, etc.

These phones are not even slightly aimed at the same market as your average Nokia/SE/Samsung. They are a premium product aimed at people who already have plenty of disposable income.

And of course the Vertu has the concierge service.

Yet all the rich/famous use Blackberrys. I think the vertu phones are quite ugly and probably don't have as many features as a blackberry
