So many sub-genres... Thrash Metal, speed metal, soft metal, industrial metal, neo-classical, death metal...and I'm sure I've missed plenty out.

That being the case I propose a new system.

The main categories would be...

Leather,
Denim, and
Latex.

Some bands will fit neatly into one of these categories e.g The Scorpians would be a leather metal band whereas motorhead could be said to be more of a denim outfit.

Obviously some bands will be a cross e.g. Iron Maiden would be said to be Denim/Leather metal.

If we are to take this approach,

1) What would be your favourite metal style ? and

2)which configuration would be the ideal metal line-up ?

I propose..

Denim/leather drummer, Denim bassist, Leather rhythm guitar, Latex lead guitar, singer generally Latex except for that dodgy 3rd album when he tried mixing it up with some sheepskin.

My original post was a joke.

Yes & No though, yes their related but there is quite a difference between say 80s Glam and Thrash.

I have a rule. If the metal genre is made up of one word followed by 'metal', then it's a legit genre. If it is multiple words followed by metal, then it's a description and whoever's trying to call it a genre is an idiot who can't understand the fact that not everything has to go in a neat little box.
For example: 'Death Metal' Fine, that's helpful. Tells you what sort of music it is, what to expect etc.
'Extreme Vampyric Gothic Metal' That's a personal description of ONE BAND- probably the only band it fits. It is not a genre on its own.

Sometimes I wonder if some Metal subgenres could be merged though. I mean, is there really that big a difference between Black and Death metal, or Symphonic and Gothic metal. I mean, there is A difference, yes, but is it significant enough to matter? Probably not.

I disagree with pidgeon holing as well.

The music industry is mostly all about marketing now though isn't it ?, Very little art to be found on a major label nowadays (excluding back catalogue of course).

Metal sub-genres aren't always necessarily pigeon-holing though - just categorising. I agree with the poster who said if there's more than one word in front of it then it's unneccessary, but everything else is fine.

There's a clear difference between symphonic metal like Nightwish, and death-metal like Cannibal Corpse. I don't care if you love or hate the genre - you have to be tone-deaf not to recognise that there is a great deal of variety in it.

That's all well and good but there's a world of difference between this, this and this.

But when it comes to things like "Nordic blackened death metal" then yeah, it can be pretty ridiculous.

So nobody thinks the retailers will adopt my Denim, Leather, Latex system for classifying metal then ?

Aha Metal, Dimmu Borgir. Wikipedia have them down as Symphonic black metal. Here's a list of the genres http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres I've never heard any folk metal before, well I can't recall hearing any. Wonder what that's like.

I agree with this although the type of metal i listen to you can only download due to nowhere selling. Why is it so hard to buy metal albums in this country? Both Itunes and Amazon has poor selection of metal.

As for Folk Metal it's easily my favourite genre in metal well that and Viking Metal.

It's- OK I suppose. I haven't heard much, but from what I have heard it works better than you'd think it would. Personally wasn't that keen though- I can't like folk, no matter what else they mix it with.

In some ways genres/sub-genres are important. They give you an idea what to expect. Say for instance you like your metal loud and thrashy and grungy, but would hate to hear violins, cellos or pianos in there --- stay away from Prog, Symphonic Metal etc. Or if you hate growly voices (as I do) --- I think they call them "Death vocals" --- probably best to give Death/Black/Goth/Doom metal a miss.
Of course, in doing so you could be missing out on some really good music. I tried Haggard, loved it until the guy started singing. Same with Opeth. It's just a thing with me. I like to be able to make out the words that are being sung.
So I know to stay generally away from those sub-genres, which is about the only real use I can see for them being used.
Oh, and one more thing ---- IRON MAIDEN!!!!

I agree with this entirely. I also ignore the last four letters when I see a subgenre ending in "-core" e.g. sludgecore and metalcore.
