I've got a similar choice, Portishead- Sour Times.
Probably because it's a sample used to great effect, without being too gimmicky. |

Sorry to go all highbrow, but for me it's E lucevan le stelle from Puccini's Tosca. Especially when sung live by Placido Domingo

I love songs like this!
Wind of Change- Scorpions. It's hard not to get the chills from that, given what it's about (end of communism in Europe) I've just listened to it 3 times in a row. But then, I seem to get the shivers at any anti-war song, regardless of how it sounds. This is why I find Serj Tankian's Empty Walls good, and it's possibly the only reason I like Nerina Pallot's Everybody's Gone to War. What Else is There- Royksopp. Video helps a lot, although this is a very ethereal sounding song without any help. The version on my Ipod even has a creepy voice perform a cryptic speech at the end. Doctor Blind- Emily Haines. Again, the video helps, although it really is not necessary. No Time to Cry- Cradle of Filth cover in particular, although I suppose the Sisters of Mercy original counts as well, although it's ages since I've heard it, so I can't be sure. Again, the video of the CoF version is suitably spine-chilling- especially the end. Blue- The Birthday Massacre. I pick this song in particular because of the creepy background music, and the way the vocals change back and forth from sing-song girlish vocals to harsh, throaty growling, although the Birthday Massacre are made of creepy, really. Cryptorchid- Marilyn Manson- its a very strangely structured song, but very eerie in sound. Also Coma Black to a slightly lesser degree, which is basically about someone's life being wrecked. Amerika- Rammstein. Very Odd choice perhaps, but the meaning of the song mixed with the video make it very powerful. Also Sonne, due to its cryptic nature. Most songs by Versailles. To be honest though, this is probably just because there is nothing about that band that isn't stupidly striking. The vocals, the guitars, the drums, even the clothes, hairstyles and sets. Black Hole Sun- Soundgarden. Same reasons as the Manson and Rammstein songs. Vague but dystopic-sounding lyrics and mind screw videos are two things that grunge and industrial metal seem to have in common. Infection- D'espairsray- a good case of Narm Charm here. The lyrics are hammy and cliched, the grammar is poor, several lines don't make sense and the singer Hizumi's accent is so bad the lyrics are unintelligible at times, but, somehow, it still works very well. |

When The Tigers Broke Free - Pink Floyd.
The story of how Roger Waters Father was killed in the war. Very moving, and shows why Waters later political views developed. |
