The Wire was five minutes late starting tonight and my recording was cut off despite changing the settings to allow for 3 minutes overrun.

Fortunately I was watching. Seems like Newsnight ends when it wants to end. I'm writing in.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the US series 'The Wire'.

I was pleased to learn of your thorough enjoyment of this series, however I understand you're unhappy at present that your recorder has not included the final few minutes of the last three or four episodes.

The Freesat PVR is missing the show's final minutes at present because of sudden schedule changes on BBC2 which means the show is being broadcast a few minutes later than billed on your EPG or TV guide.

We realise that late schedule changes are annoying to our audience, especially when a programme such as 'The Wire' has been extensively trailed or has been singled out by the viewer as one of particular interest. We honestly try to keep changes to the schedule to a minimum.

We also allow programme-makers some flexibility in running time, although all programmes are expected to run about one minute less than their slot time so that we can accommodate promotional trails and continuity announcements. If a programme is over-running slightly, it may be necessary to begin it a little early.

The Radio Times and other listings publications prefer to bill programme schedules in five-minute blocks for easy reference, but this does not necessarily mean a programme will start or end at that time precisely. On occasions some programmes may start up to one minute early, or run a few minutes late.

I realise you may continue to be frustrated by this matter, but I can assure you that I've registered your comments on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and our scheduling team within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

Regards

This was similar to the same lame excuse I had from the BBC. The purpose of the Freesat PVR specification is to prevent this happening, as long as the broadcasters supply the correct information. Anyway, there were no 'sudden' changes to the schedule when these episodes were broadcast, the preceding programmes just over-ran!
