I'm an idiot - I know
I went to visit someone in hospital yesterday, went to the loo and took my phone out of my back pocket and put it on the toilet roll holder. Then left the toilet minus my phone. Went back about ten minutes later, but it had gone. I reported it to the hospital, but unsurprisingly it hasn't been
handed in. I have/had a Blackberry, and it was insured, but as I'm honest, i told the insurers the above story, and found out as I left it in a public place, it is my fault. I am getting a new sim card sent to me, but need a phone to put it in. What i want to know is: 1) Can i cancel my contract and then just start again? 2) Is there any way I can claim for my lost phone? 3) Is it best to just get a cheapy phone and put my sim in it. You cant just cancel your contract. If you do want to end the contract you will have to pay off the remaining months of the contract. For example if you have 10 months left on a £30 per month contract you have to pay £300 to cancel it.
So that would depends on how many months you have left on the contract. If you only have a few and dont mind paying the charges, best thing to do is to reduce it to the lowest tarriff first, then cancel. However, as you will be paying the amount anyway you might as well just lower the tarriff and keep it. If you want a new contract that is. |

Surely this would be covered under accidental loss of the phone? You made all appropriate steps to regain the handset but were unsuccessful, so I would have thought you could claim.

it might be worth checking your contents insurance. and reading the terms very carefully before you claim.
if you get a cheap PAYG get it on the same network as you are on, chuck out the new sim, put the old one and continue to use the tariff that yo are on. |

Just as a side note, be careful when it comes to false claims, as you will need to report loss and thefts to the police and get a crime number in order to claim. Lying to the cops isn't really recommended! As another side note, insurance is often not required nor worth the money you're paying. For a high value phone such as a Blackberry, it is certainly worth considering, but cheaper phones (sub £100-150) tend to have the same monthly payments and excesses as the top-end ones. For example P4Us policy is £10 per month plus £50 excess if you claim. On a phone worth £100, you are better just buying a new phone (unless something happened within the first couple of months). There are considerably cheaper insurance packages out there however - O2 and Vodafone's being a couple of examples, but make sure you know EXACTLY what they will cover. The amount of things that can be excluded may surprise you. One of my favs is water damage/liquid damage. The policy advertises it covers water damage, but this apparently excludes liquid damage. Following? So basically unless you dropped your phone in ANYTHING other that 100% pure water, you're not covered!! (They have to make their money some how I guess!) |

See I understand why Orange champions their Insurance when it comes to situations like this.
They cover any phone for £6 per month and it is covered for loss, theft, accidental and malicious damage and also extended cover for mechanical breakdown. It also offers a 24 hour phone replacement service and the excess is only £15. I once tried to claim on my banks "free" phone insurance and they wanted £50 excess and I'd have to wait up to 28 days for the phone as I had to send them proof of purchase and wait for their decision, hence I didn't claim as I can't be without a phone for that long. |
