Brilliant - as the reality TV shows plunge to a new low, it's good to see some real music as the Christmas Number one.
Well done those guys.

Mard World is Crimbo Number one. God, I am disappointed, I wanted it to be the darkness!!! Now we have to listen to that depressing track over our turkey instead of jamming guitars and bells...

We had an absaloutely perfect Christmas Number One, and we go and wreck it and put the most depressing song ever as our number one.

AND ITS A COVER!!!

The Darkness is number one in my household anyway.

I cant quote this as im not sure it happened, but i have been told Justin for The Darkness said in an interview about their last single, that in some ways a number 2 is more solid than a number 1.

I thought that was quite funny anyway

I am absolutely delighted Mad World is the best song of the YEAR bar none, I am made up it didnt go to any of this contrived novelty crap (cheeky girls, avid merrion, the darkness) how desperate did the Darkness get this week - slagging Gary Jules off, personal signings, horse drawn carriages,LOL. It just goes to show you can't keep a good song down.I recommend anyone who hasn't seen Donnie Darko to watch it.

Im not saying its a bad songbut at Christmas you want something fun and mad and christmassy. And Novelty Rock is quite rare! Good on the Darkness for al their hard promotion work. They were having fun!!!

And Christmas is about fun surely?

Mad World hardly gets u in the xmas spirit, does it?

What a disappointment. I'm not especially a Darkness fan but they released an upbeat, enjoyable song which at least had a Christmas feel. So what do the 'Great' British public do? They go off and buy some covered dirge by a right-on, homosexual, Michael Stipe wannabe and his friend. I suppose many 'connected' with the lyrics which reflect their angst-filled, depressed, devoid of meaningful achievement, 9-5 existences.

All you people who don't fit into that typography, crank up Christmas Time anyway!

SAD WORLD

A bit OT, but i have read reviews of Donnie Darko on the IMDB, most saying the film isnt too good. Recently because of this song i have heard many people rate the film quite highly, so i am now in the process of 'aquireing' it.

Darkness should have been number 1. They were the band of 2003, and it would have been justice if they'd have got there first number 1 at xmas.

Plus the Gary Jules song is a bloody cover. People lambast Pop Idol people for doing cover songs, so this shouldn't be any different.

Uh, what's your point? How would it be justice if the Darkness got a number one at Christmas?

Some cover versions are good, some are bad, in my opinion the Gary Jules track is great, but I also like the original and Alex Parks' version as well.

They deserve a number 1, they were robbed when IBIATCL didn't get to number 1, they've got by far the best song out of the xmas contenders, and therefore it would have been justice.

I agree on that.

IBIATCL was fantastic and deserved Number One most definitely.

Of course, none of that is actually fact, it is all just your opinion.

I don't think they especially deserve a number one, or that they were robbed when "I Believe..." didn't get number one. Nor do I think they've got the best song from the Christmas contenders, in fact I think I've only heard it once or twice on the radio and I can't say it stuck in my head particularly.

So, again, how would it have been justice, other than in your one opinion?

No, believe me, this won't spoil my dinner come Thursday - I was merely expressing my opinion. Wrong about Band Aid: it passed my Christmas-feel test and was not dirge; on the contrary, it's quite uplifting. As I said, I'm no Darkness fan but would back them over Jules any day. I never said Jules' sexuality had anything to do with it; I was merely stating some facts.

Merry Christmas!!!

Well if it had nothing to do with it, why did you even mention it in the first place?

Was this to me, Catzy? If it was then I was pointing out to MarkH that what he was stating as a fact was, in fact, his own opinion.
