I didn't know that....I have been bitching about her behaviour

Who wouldn't of been nervous with the world watching your first live performance, but Susans talent shone through tonight, well done Susan.

I thought she did really well after her somewhat shaky start. I feared for her then, but she pulled off a great performance once she had settled. The pressure must have been almost unbearable. She should have admitted she was nervous though because she clearly was. Perhaps she feels it would be a sign of weakness if she did and hiding her feelings is something she has probably had to do all her life. It is true, she is sometimes socially awkward, no doubt due to nerves that she is trying to hide. Maybe when the nerves settle and she gets used to the situation, she will be able to drop the sometimes embarrassing little things she does.

It really is impossible to comprehend the pressure this woman is under. Never before has a talent show contestant been hyped, their performance beamed across the world after one performance. I am not exaggerating when I say my heart was beating so fast before she came on. God knows how she felt.

As for her celebratory dance, we must remember that Susan will be socially awkward. It is not just her being daft or big headed, but she is a woman with learning difficulties who has for her whole life been picked on and laughed at. For the last two years she has lived alone and now the whole world is watching her.

She is finally having her time, and the pressure and excitement is probably overwhelming.

I just hope this story has a happy ending.”

A touching and very sensible post. I must say, I felt for her last night. I feel she may have been a tingy wingy bit disappointed with her performance though because of the nerves and hype. And I noticed whilst Ant and Dec were asking her how she feels about the media and how popular she is, she managed to avoid anwering the question. That maybe because she's hoping to just focus on her singing.

To the OP a very delightful post. And I 100% agree with what your saying the pressure she was under last night must have been unbelievable compared to her first audition as no one expected what was to unfold back then.

A welcome thread.

The media circus surrounding Susan isn't her fault, so complaints about that should be directed towards those responsible instead of Susan

(and you CAN avoid the hype; it isn't difficult, just avoid the tabloids and don't watch dire news outlets like GMTV and ITV1 and the regular BBC1 news programmes etc.)

@Vivadiva - your thoughtful post sums up how I feel about Susan. None of this is her fault, she entered a competition knowing that people where she lives enjoyed her singing, that's all. Yes, she seems awkward and sometimes silly, but as you say, she has no social skills. When it was announced that she was through to the semi-final, she took several seconds before it sank in, compare that with Leona Lewis' OTT reaction when told she was the winner.

I think she's lovely, and I hope she doesn't change.

The Pressure on her Must have have been so great.

you just know within seconds of her act ending it was going to be all over the internet.

I must be honest I dont like that song whoever sings it I really hope for the final they allow her to sing the song shes most at ease with.

If you see here Its after she holds her tummy she pulls it together.

My feeling is that BGT is negligent in its exploitation of her. She has a decent voice and an interesting back-story but is not really equipped to deal with the media spotlight and I feel she has been used to promote the show when maybe they should have held her back for the semis like they have done with some of the other acts - I don't know anything about some of them at all - it feels to me that the need for sensational TV has come out on top.

She is a decent singer but nowhere near as good as the hype suggests, yet she is never criticised while other acts are pulled apart for the slightest little thing. Last night's performance was terrible and while I can understand her nerves, it annoys me that the Judges did not comment once about her dodgy singing.

As for the behaviour, victory dance etc. It's quite sweet, I don't understand any of these accusations of arrogance/believing the hype. I think she is overwhelmed. Unfortunately I don't think she will be properly guided and looked after any time soon.

It is refreshing to read through a thread with some very heart warming and reasonable messages about Susan Boyle, lets hope we see some more today, about a lovely woman who despite having learning difficulties has been brave enough to stand up before the world in her very first live performance over come her nerves and give us a great singing performance, well done Susan.

I will repeat what I said for the small minority that it refers to in case they may have missed it.

'Three cheers for Vivadiva, at last someone speaks out against the nasty offensive personal attacks being made against Susan Boyle on this message board, some people on here should be hanging there heads in shame.

Thank you Vivadive you are a voice of reason in this jungle of message board nastiness, and you reflect the thoughts and sentiments of the wider public in the real world, where people do not hide behind silly names to make anonymous offensive personal insults and attacks about a decent caring and lovely talented woman. I agree with this too.

I defended Susan on another thread earlier today and someone arrived at the conclusion that for me to be defending her against petty criticism and downright nastiness, I must be one of her family.

This thread has some of the most charming messages I have seen on a message board for some time.

I have just found out that dear Susan had a cold and sore throat when she performed in the semi final, which makes her singing achievement all the more stunning.

Well done Susan good luck and I hope you are better in time for the Final on Saturday.

Having heard her 'Cry me river' rendition on youtube, there is no doubt that with proper training, and good producers, she'll be a very, very good singer.

I've no sympathy with her at all. No one forced her to enter the show and she could pull out at any time, which would be the most sensible option.
