The OVI store opened this morning.

The OVI store is designed to be like the Apple app store with lots of free and paid for applications, wall papers, ringtones etc. in the future this will be the market place for all your S60 apps.

somewhat confusingly the OVI store, the place where you will get your future applications has to be downloaded the old way you get your applications. ovi store can be installed from applications - Download.

if it's not there on your s60 device then it should be soon as all devices are expected to be added by the end of the day

a couple of points to make

1) there's plenty of free stuff, and you can set it to only show free stuff.
2) at the top of the page (for me) is a free star trek ringtone
3) you do need to sign in, create account etc.

but it's all very exciting.

It seems to be very busy. The Ovi app on my E90, nearly always shows "unable to connect to server". Going direct to store.ovi.com gets the web page, but its slow. Guess, most of the world is trying to access it!

Full of apps that have already been available for years, overpriced apps or rubbish apps. It's the first day though so I'll give it a chance but on first impressions it's a big thumbs down.

The thing I like about Apple's appstore is that the apps are original, creative, useful and priced just right. I can't say that about any of the apps on Ovi store at the minute.

the apps will come. There's a bit of a chicken and egg thing. But now the platform exists i'm sure more apps will be written.

Going forward the ovi store will be more central to nokia phones. At the moment the only people who know about it will be people who read forums like this.

True. I'd say the majority of Nokia users will not even have heard about Ovi store yet.

I'll give it a few months and see how it goes. The prices are just a joke at the minute though, a lot of things can be got free (and legally) elsewhere. I just have a feeling that Nokia will keep the prices high for some reason.

Come a few months it'll either be a huge success or a big failure and at the minute my gut instinct is pointing towards the latter...

nokia have high hopes for it. And the networks like it because it has network billing.

Who knows. There's a lot of money in this sector. It's impossible for me to imagine why anyone would want to pay for a wallpaper. But they do...

That sms preview is ok, flip silent. That star trek ringtone is the actual one in the film.

I have high hopes for it too, maybe that's why i'm disappointed on first impressions.

I really like my 5800 but I change my phone around every 6 months and how ovi store is in the next few months may make the difference between whether i keep the phone for longer than usual, go for another nokia or completely switch and go for the new iphone (if it's out).

I know that sounds a bit dramatic but content is a big deal to me on a mobile phone. The update coming to the iphone next month closes a lot of gaps (cut and paste, mms etc) on my 5800. Leaving the main difference (for me at least) being content available.

Is this just for Nokia phones, or all phones that use symbian?

Its primarily for Nokia phones (not just Symbian), but if you go to the website. There is an "any phone" section.

I just installed Trapster on my Innov8 - admittedly not through Ovi - I followed an external link.
