I am looking for a new set of knives, but am having trouble finding ones that I like the look of ( I know, a knife is a knife!). We have some Global knives but I don't like the handles - anyone recommend any sets? If anyone has an Alessi set I'd be interested to know how they are. Thanks

I use Henckels and I also have some Wusthof knives. I wouldn't buy a set though as there will always be a couple you never use. Basically you only really need a chefs knife (8" or 10"), a carving knife, a bread knife and a paring knife. These will do 99% of any food prep tasks. Go into any good kitchen equipment shop and ask to handle them, then see what feels comfortable in your hand. They needn't be the same brand. Then make sure you look after them by keeping them sharp and storing them either in a block, or my preferance, on a magnetic strip. Never let them rattle around in a drawer, that's the quickest way to dull the edges. A little care and they'll last many years.

Quite heavy but functional rather than fashionable like global.

Yes, that's the thing. I prep meals from scratch 6/7 days a week and use our knives constantly. I need something functional, and it's time to move up to something more investment-wise in the knives department. Thanks for the ideas, shall have a good look at all of them.

Don't touch ebay.
99% are fake.

Victorinox Fibrox knives are very good - and very reasonably priced as well. They are made by the same company that makes the Swiss Army Knives.

I use Anolon as listed above. Very good but get a sharpener as well!

I have Anolon knives and I love them. The handles are rubber coated and really comfortable to hold. I also recently bought the ceramic Anolon wet sharpener and its so easy to use and gets a great edge to the knives.
