He's clearly only interested in making as much money as possible off any of the acts that win but the whole point of the show is to find something the Queen would enjoy. The cogs in Simon's brain however are clearly only calculating possible first week album sale profits.

No, the whole point is to find the most talented act. The RVP is an added bonus. In the American version there is just a cash prize.

He said there would be a lot of trash acton tonight. We even ended up with one of them going through to the final.

Stavros and Shaheen deserved to go through. MD sucked big time tonight!

He just doesn't seem to grasp the concept of variety.

Variety is a bit of everything. Singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, acrobats, ventriloquists, clowns, drag acts. Just watch the royal variety show.

This show should provide the ideal opporunity to discover a new comedian or magician. But for Simon its all about singers and dancers for some reason. Anyone he can make a fast buck out of.

Im suprised he allowed Faryl Smith onto the show seeing how she signed up with a rival label, one that will actually look after her and nuture her talents, rather than screw her over and dump her on the scrap heap after one album like he did with Gareth Gates, Steve Brookstein, Michelle McManus, Ray Quinn etc.

How can he not get the point of the show?

It's his show, he made it, he owns it, he produces it. The point of the show is whatever he wants it to be!

We can disagree of course, I personally feel there is a lack of variety in the semi-finals. By the same point, I've not seen a good variety act yet that has been unduly criticised. They've just made a poor effort of getting the variety in there. Previous years have had more of it.

I actually think we'll just see Susan Boyle get signed this year anyway. Andrew Johnston/Faryl Smith and even Escala have done OK, but they haven't set the world alight compared to the other acts on his label.

Simon IMO has ruined this week so far..its NOT xfactor.

but why is he acting like it is? the judges put these people through and simon approved most of them so why is he acting like he had nothing to do with the process?

he should be reading the riot act whoever drew up mondays show and put so many strong acts in one bloody night!!

The Royal Variety is quite plainly just the cover story; the show is a Simon Cowell vehicle in which he fattens up as many cash cows as he can find, exposes them for weeks on prime-time national telly and then sends them to the slaughterhouse for a quick buck before the next of his RTV shows starts the week.

Cowell worships the mediocre and the status quo- he is the wrong sort of judge for a show like this.

I usually think Simon is on the ball but reckon he made a mistake last night by putting Shaun through to the final - Shaheen was always going though, and he's a much better singer - we now have three singers through, with at least two more virtually guaranteed places. There is a distinct lack of variety this year and the blame lies solely with the judges (or whoever selected the semi-finalists...).

Simon still just wants to sign up acts, I can't see him getting Shaheen which is probably why he didn't vote for him...

I 100% agree. I would say the only variety act who deserved to go through was Gareth, and even then he had no shot of winning anyway. I think before it being about variety, it has to be about talent.

Faryl has done pretty well though in her genre.

Thats an interesting point. Shaheen appears to already have a career. He doesn't need Simon.

I think there's little doubt he'd like an act that could potentially sell lots of records. It's obvious that he wants money and success. He's not doing this show just to entertain us! However, Shaheen/Hollie/Shaun won't sell lots of records and there are more important things than the potential albums.

He's produced 5 series of these shows. He has signed 2 singing winners. He didn't sign the Paul Potts-a-like winner of America's Got Talent 3, George Sampson won't be lighting up the Syco income statement by any means, Bianca Ryan bombed and he didn't sign Terry Fator from AGT2 (though he's probably made more money from him than the others!).

The ratings and international format sales of this show are worth so much more than 150,000-200,000 album sales.

On the positive side, he doesn't seem at all impressed by this series. Hopefully that'll lead to a push to improve the standard next year.

Nope, they also get a contract to do a season in Las Vegas.

I do wish BGT would drop the RVP crap though, absolutely NOBODY cares about the RVP any more, and when a contestant talks about how they have "always dreamed of being on the RVP", it doesn't ring remotely true.

Nobody seriously believes BGT is about finding an act that the Queen would enjoy.

This has just reminded me of the funniest part of the evening: Did anyone else see Simon sitting stony-faced whilst everyone else was cheering wildly at Faryl's performance?

Interesting Faryl has signed for Warner Classics, who dump decent musicians and then reissue all their tapes at knockdown prices, and not Syco... Hmm tough one Warner... Ton Koopman or Faryl Smith... oh yeah, ditch the real musician who knows how to interpret and sign the poster girl off national TV who sings all the notes the same.

Cowell wanted her, but her parents said no.

he is doing it for publicity. How many people have heard of him now? No doubt he'll do a Faryl and arrange his own deal away from Syco and BGT, get some discs out before his voice breaks.
