This is really annoying and i have contacted BT about it but they say it isn't anything to do with them

It is a plain stupid nuisance call which is shown here Who Is Calling Me

I heard of a scam once where they can actually jam your line and charge you for it or something. Like reverse charging without your consent. They had either silent line, or some robot talking obscure nonsense to keep you on the line.

I'd make sure you hang up right away and check the line is clear.

Have you tried the BT Nuisance Call Bureau on 0800 411 422?
They will try to contact the other person on your behalf.

Register with TPS, takes 28 days to come into effect.

TPS won't stop Silent calls.

You need to register with another service for that, and even then it may have no effect.

However it is quite possible that the company making these calls is in breach of Ofcom regulations. Particularly the one that says they must have a short recorded message identifying the originator of the call. If they are truely silent then you may want to report them to Ofcom for investigation.

Load of tosh, why to people pass on these urban legends?

I've had similar and also been stopped in the street, told them the best way for me to save money was not to join their ****### club.

The clubs when you look them up sell mostly expensive items and then dearer than you can get elsewhere if you look properly and they want a fee for this rip-off too, only fools sign up to these.

Registering with TPS should stop these calls, did for me and my mum anyway. But it takes 28 days for the information to filter down through all the systems so be prepared for a few more.

But if you mention the magic letters T P and S they soon vanish, the thought of a 5 grand fine does wonders for these muppets

And you can always write to them asking to have your number removed from their lists. Any UK company is legally required to honour that request and risks Ofcom descending on them if they ignore you

Seems there are a few of these at the moment. Here is another which appears to be well known

If it's a man calling, I ask him if his wife or girlfriend knows he's gay? anything to p**s them off.
