depends what CDs you mean, i don't buy many western ones but yes they are overpriced but you can get some for 8 or 9 quid from places like CD-WOW.

now thai CDs* are about 4 quid including P&P from thailand, if only all CDs were that price!

* legit ones, pirates will be even cheaper of course

I think Albums should cost £10 and maybe about £12 if their double albums, but no more than that! HMV sometimes charge £16 to £18 for CD's which is a rip off and why loads of ppl download music. CD singles should be £2, never any more, otherwise you'll never gonna make ppl go out and buy music when u can download for free.

If albums were near the £6.99 mark on a regular basis, then I would consider buying more.

Under £10 for an album that was good.

I refuse to buy cds from the major chains on princple - why should I spend £15 quid on a cd if I can get it for a tenner or less elsewhere?
I get my cds either direct from the record label (if possible of course, but it can work out pretty reasonable. I got a bunch of cds direct from Earache's online store the other day for £7.87 each: HMV would've charged me £16 each for the same cds ), from my favourite independant record shop (they tend to charge about a tenner for new releases) or from ebay

CDs are always under £10 (except doubles of course) in Tesco and Kwik Save (£9.87) Why buy them anywhere else? Every town has one surely? I would never pay more.

It's about being creative: shop around and don't accept that £15 is the proper price for a cd! HMV don't need our money but plenty of smaller chains or indies do and you'll often get a better deal for yourself in the end...

If you want an album that is in the Top 40 that is!

If you want something else, your looking at anything from £12 to £18 !

A friend of mine wanted the new Dolly Parton cd for Christmas. Play aren't stocking it,HMV wanted £22-99 as an import! £22-99!! How can they justify that, even given the fact it was an import. In the end I ordered it directly from Tower.com and got it for £11 including postage!

The trouble is they don't always have the albums I want.

Yeah, they would never have my kind of stuff in Tesco either, but there are other ways to avoid paying HMV prices IMO

I find it rather frustrating to download an album and then copy it to cd, especially if there are errors or the quality doesnt sound too good.

I want good quality and I would like proper covers etc, so if CD;'s were a little more reasonable then I would rather pay than download.

If it's an artist I really like and would like to support then I would buy the album.

CD poracy is just another effect of rip-off britain.

I totally agree with that. HMV can be such a rip off. I refuse to buy anything from them.

Thats right! As soon as an album goes out of the top 40, HMV pump the price up. Ridiculous.

Which is a great reason not to shop at HMV... I don't think any of the last few albums I bought got within spitting distance of the top 40 so I'm never gonna get them cheap from HMV.
So I take my custom elsewhere and get stuff for cheaper. Easy

I only get my albums from independent stores or online, they are usually cheaper and have a better variety if you want non chart cds. For example I bought an album for £7 as opposed to the £15 HMV want for it.
I refuse to pay those overinflated prices.

I stopped buying CD's, when I got burgled the first time (1998) and had hundreds stolen, I had the money instead from the insurance, as I decided then not to replace them.

As for downloads sounding not as good, this is because they are compressed using MP3 (MPEG1 - Layer 3), MP3 is a lossy compression and depending on what bit-rate has been used affects the quality of sound. Plus after a compression/decompression cycle, the data set will be modified from the uncompressed original and information may be lost. (The MP3 and the converted back to CD MP3 is no longer the same as the original)

In the shops definatley. But i get all mine off Play.com.
i just got the new Blink 182 for £7.49, now that's cheap!

I get the up-to-date releases from Asda or Tesco, and other stuff I get in the independant stores. Like most of you guys here - I don't pay more than £10 for an album or £12 for a double. If there's something specialist I want - then I buy it over the net and get it shipped to me.

I don't download songs because the quality just isn't good enough for DJ-ing with IMHO.
