ripening avocados
I'm planning on making some guacamole tonight but the only avocados I could find this morning were pretty hard. Has anyone any suggestions of how I might ripen them a bit before this evening in order soften them up enough for mashing?
TIA |

They work like bananas, stick 'em in a brown paper bag and keep it in the dark somewhere.
If you're using a bit of lime juice for the guacamole that softens up them up too.

Ok, excellent. Thanks Pam....
Next question: any idea where I might get a brown paper bag?

Thanks stud. I have them in a dark cupboard at the moment.
My mum suggested the hot-press too... but I'll see how they are this evening & maybe try the microwave. |

If they're like bullets, i doub't if they're going to be soft enough for Guacamole by this evening.

Yeah, I might just have to take the car & search a bit further afield. Store bought guacamole is just not good.

Of course, you all know that "avocado" is the Nahuatl word for "testicle", don't you?

It's not particulary helpful (Sorry), but after advice I tried putting one in a bag with a banana on Friday for Sunday lunch.....it didn't work.
Putting the avocado on the sunny windowsill worked perfectly........by Tuesday. |

Apparently you should heat your oven up to about 200 degrees, once it hits that temperature, switch it off. Wrap the avocados in newspaper and chuck them in for 20 minutes or so...
Courtesy of a greengrocer on "Come Dine with Me" so please don't blame me if they melt!! |

Just to update...
By the time I started making the guacamole last night I was past hunger and well under the influence so I decided that the best way to ripen an avocado was to leave it for another day. Yummy Guacamole & Salsa have now been lovingly & soberly prepared, and chicken is marinading for fajitas a bit later on. |

If your gonna have a meal later in the week and the ads are abit hard just put them next to a banana , it does work.
