Age shouldn't really be an issue. Besides Billie Piper was playing a 19 year old.

She looks interesting, tbh im more intrigued about her than Matt Smith! It would be nice if the assistant wasnt London based again, although she may be doing an accent for all we know.

I'd be happy if the rumours were true that the companion will be a scottish maid from 19th Century. Just be something a bit different.

I would. I so would.

Karen almost certainly woudn't, of course.

Interesting that they've deliberately avoided naming her - which might just be something simple like they haven't thought one up. But perhaps it's a name we already know...

Donna?

River Song?

Romana perhaps?

Maybe not.

God I hope not!! Also, I would have thought that SM would want to make the show his own - Donna was RTD's character and what would be the point in bringing in a young River Song? Nah, brand new character for me please!

that's why i had to add "a few blips aside" because you are exactly right, there have been ups and down in the ages of the actors as the series has progressed since the start.

i just wondered about the overall dr who mythos, and whether the character of the doctor is supposed to get (roughly) younger as his incarnations regenerate. sort of aging backwards-ish as he uses up his lives

I just hope she'll use her Scottish accent! The first scottish companion since Jamie back in the 60s! Can't wait!

Series 5 is shaping up to be quite interesting!

Well I'd prefer a brunette, but a redhead will do nicely

So after all the speculation we now know. And the reaction here seems to be pretty positive!

She's certainly a very good-looking girl. I don't really know what her acting is like - her brief role in Fires of Pompeii wasn't much to go on - but I'm sure she'll be good. I don't see them picking her just for her looks.

I like the idea of her being a 19th century Scottish maid. No reason why all the companions need to come from present day London!

It would be nice to have someone from the past for a change, it would be like a table-turned Life on Mars.

But, wasn't Jamie from the 19th century too? It wouldn't be fair if all the Scottish companions came from the past!!

Reminds me of a joke by Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week, pretending to be the Doctor; "It appears we've landed in the 19th Century! Oh wait, no, its Glasgow 2007"

Made me lol. Though I love Scotland.

More to the point, it'd be nice to have Karen Gillen in a maid's uniform.

Jamie was from the 18th century, not the 19th.

And add me to list of people who'd LOVE another historical companion.

Or even better, no clothes at all! Just let her come from some distant planet with compulsory naturism and then she can prance around showing her bits to all and sundry and Moffart won't even have to bother with a plot.

hmmm...i think I will reserve this post for the next time someone has the audacity to imply there is something wrong with someone fancying The Doctor and that doing so makes them less a fan of the show somehow.....

Aye, first promo shot - probably typically Matt and Karen standing on the set of their first scene together, both in costume, and perhaps in front of a TARDIS - will probably emerge in mid-late July.

Series 4's was in August 2007, but then again they had the Christmas special to film in July, and that's already finished filming this year. Its likely to be mid-July.

And I cannn't waaait!

Thanks for that list Trollface.....this is what I have been saying.....Karen being as young as she is, is hardly a new thing......

I'm sorry to say this, but that is really unfair.....so what if she is beautiful, or that some men find her sexy, hardly means that this is the only reason she got the job....especially at a stage where we don't even know how she is going to perform....but the ones who hired her do.....so at least wait....I mean fair enough you had problems with Ryan, as you thought she was a rubbish actress, and they probably hired her on her looks, but also that didn't make sense to you as she wasn't that pretty according to you.....but at least you had seen her acting before, and therefore came to that judgement, even though it is your opinion.....but to say it for someone we have no idea how she will be is a bit unfair.....

And anyway, even if they have hired her for her looks, it wouldn't be the first time, and I am not talking about the New series.......

Niether can I......I think when such photos come out, it will probably hit that it really is an end of one era, and the start of a new one.......sad...and exciting....
