It dawned on me today, that with most songs, I find it hard to hear the words in the song. I would catch the odd sentence, but some words just aren't pronounced properly. It's not an issue of volume, it's just diction and pronounciation

When you listen to songs, do you always hear the words properly the first time you listen to it? Or do you read the cover sleeves/look at the lyrics online?

Don't even care for the lyrics. It's the tune that I like.

It depends-I often listen to songs that aren't sung in English and my aptitude for other languages can be very limited. I'll usually look the lyrics up and run them through a translator if that's the case.

It really depends on the type of song being sang. If its some Raggae Dancehall for example, such as Mavado. It's a bit hard to understand. Similar problem with Busta Rhymes style speed rapping.

Even if I can tell all the words someone is singing, I still find it useful to have the lyrics in front of me. That way I learn the song better.

Sometimes you find that what you thought they sang is completely different to what the lyrics actually are! You can sing a particular song for years, only to discover you've been singing the wrong words! Makes a difference even if you're only out by a couple of words.

An example of a song where one word really DOES make a difference:-

'Please Don't Touch' by Motorhead & Girlschool - for a long time I was convinced they were singing "Please don't touch I shag so much" when in fact it's "Please don't touch I shake so much".

As some have said a lot of it depends on the artist. Some tend to mumble a bit, or their accent can throw you off.
But with most of the artists I like I can pick them out rather easily.

Old stuff I can hear ok, but modern stuff I find the music over powers the words. I think Bob Dylan said there is too much noise now, he may be right...

I use broadcast audio processing, and it's tweaked to enhance the lyrics
