What “criticism” has Susan Boyle come under?
Grand Dizzy
30-05-2009
Tonight Simon said that Susan Boyle has “come under criticism” lately, and indicated that people have been having a go at her, adding: “you’ve come out here tonight in front of all your critics and proven them wrong” (or words to that effect).

What was Simon talking about? Who has criticised Susan and what exactly have they said about her?

I’m sure all the contestants have been criticised by someone, somewhere, but the way Simon said it made it sound like Susan has had a particularly hard time, or someone has been really horrible to her?

While I’m here, I may as well give my opinion on her: I have never really understood Susan’s appeal (especially how she is even famous now in America). She can sing quite well — to a degree — but there are surely hundreds of thousands of British girls who can sing just as well and are much better looking than her (I know quite a few myself), so, for me, the whole Susan Boyle sensation is a bit of a mystery. I would say the whole of the top 13 finalists on this year’s American Idol have got more going for them than her. (But I guess some of those acts would not be as popular with the Queen?)

Cruel Criticism IMO.

Very Cruel. I just hope she never uses the internet to see forums like this (BGT)...

The tabloids claiming she is nicknamed 'Rambo' in her home town because of her 'violent outbursts'.This for a woman who is a 48 year old church volunteer who visits elderly people in her neighbourhood, for heaven's sake.

Yes but people on the Internet say nasty things about everyone on these kind of shows. But Simon made a particular point of mentioning Susan’s criticism and from the way he said it, it sounded like Susan has been under particular criticism, and I would think personal attacks by someone in the media — not just the usual random comments on the Internet.

Tabloids?

I wish TV shows like this would just ignore what the tabloids say. There was a similar case a couple of years ago on The X Factor where a taboid said something nasty about one of the contestants and they mentioned it on the show — as though the opinions of the tabloid mattered to anyone.

Plus there was the backlash about her being overrated and people like Lily Allen adding their two pennorth. The worse thing was the juornos winding her up about her reaction to Piers praising Shaheen. Scummy b*stards

Oh and I forgot to mention all the personal criticism about her looks. The Hairy Angel for one thing - how rude. I just hope she doesn't have access to a computer......

Unfortunately,I think the tabloids may have stitched her up and cost her the title. She beat Diversity in the semi final on Sunday, and then the press got to work on her with all of their negative headlines ; there seemed to be a bad atmosphere in the studio towards her tonight too....you'd wonder how much the press coverage was behind this.

Well she's been under intense scrutiny this week and on the front pages of the tabloids day in, day out - pretty hard to ignore that.

It's more a case of what haven't they criticised about her - her looks, her temperament and her singing ability. It's a wonder she was even able to get out on that stage after the mauling she's had from the press this week.

Yep....the forums (well at least this forum) have been over the top with criticism of her.

But in reply to the OP, there's many links to articles that have been less than complimentary about her this week. True or not, they've certainly become a focal point for discussion here on DS this week.

In any event, I am happy that Diversity won because they were my favourite act. But for some reason it seemed like a welcome relief for Susan too as it has taken the focus away from her. It's quite sad really that she should feel that way, but that's the feeling that I got tonight.

Susan was a success (win or not) because of the combination of a nice singing voice and an interesting story that became a beacon of hope for many. Without that story, I'm not sure how far she'd have gone. The hype brought her so far, and then brought her back again.

I wish her the best though.

But the only way she could find out about what the tabloids say about her would be to read the tabloids.

Maybe tabloid readers just assume everyone else somehow knows what the tabloids are saying… but we don’t. We don’t know and we don’t care. What is printed in newsppaers is nothing but bull****.

I’m going to seem pretty ignorant now but I have absolutely no idea what her “story” is. Either I wasn’t paying attention when they said it, or I’ve just forgotten it.

Could anyone remind me?

They must have only said it once in episode 1, which is really odd because normally we get it repeated over and over. Like the way they keep repeating about 2 Grand’s wife dying. Wonder why they haven’t repeated Susan’s story?
