I only watched Thursday's SF and tonight's final. Saw Susan Boyle on the news of course. I can't see what the fuss was about, there wasn't a lot of talent or fun. It was on a par with today's FA Cup final.. So-so.

I blame the Sun which haas for the last couple of years being waging a campaign to bring back a horrible kind of patriotism which Britain use to wallow in.”

Genuine talent but only if it fits into a certain kind of mold. It's superficiality at its worst. And it's so pop based. I want to watch a show where I can hear someone like Paul Potts sing or watch a group like Diversity, who were phenomenal tonight.

Why is everyone talking as though talent shows are something new?
They've been going since noah was a nipper. Anyone remember opportunity knocks and new faces?
These 2 shows produced some very successful artistes over the years. The difference with these 2 shows and BGT and X Factor is that the main judge and head of the production company, didn't have a vested interest in who won.
It's the kind of snobbery that gets posted on here that's killed off variety in the mainstream, even though shows like this prove there's still a demand for it.

Paul Potts should have been in X-Factor. Why wasn't he? Or Susan Boyle? I agree, a talent show is the stage for acts like Diversity, or Tippy-Toes to showcase their talent. Diversity will do well on the Cabaret scene until the little boy grows up.

Paul Potts and Susan Boyle are not X Factor material. That show's looking for a pop star of a certain mould and image to sell. PP and SB will be aimed at a totally different market.
On saying that, Shaun Smith should not have been on BGT as the songs he was singing suited X Factor better.

Why is it any more demeaning than any of the other "populist tat" on tv ?
Ever watched French, Italian or Spanish tv ?..or even most of the stuff on American tv. We are intellectual giants compared with them !

They're not X-Factor-genic because they need a paper bag over their head with a hole in it (to hear them). If you're a singer, you're a singer, and X-Factor is a singing contest. I'm 39.

I've a huge satellite dish and I've seen the tat from all around Europe. BGT is right up there with the worst of them.

X Factor is not just a singing contest, it's aimed at a market where how you look is more important than how you sound.
In the PP and SB market you could have a face like a bag of spanners but if you sound good then people will buy your albums and pay to see you live.

Yes, but at least we have tat "seasons"..Italian tv (for example) is practically wall to wall rubbish, 52 weeks of the year.

It makes Britain and the british smell, to be frank. (I'm not British). Simon Cowell can apparently sell any old manure to the telly. And Ant and Dec are awful too. I enjoy the show and am not ashamed to say so.
It is good entertainment (I am of irish/french descent by the way so no flag wrapping)
You mention that there are a few exceptions so not all is lost and the show does serve some purpose even for you.
