Where are they? i don't listen to the top40 but i had a listen the other day and it made me wonder what has happened to bands?

there must be about 3 in the entire top 40 if that, and i mean proper bands that play instruments and play live.

Most singles are bought by kids, kids don't seem to be into bands these days. Certainly most of the acts I like are bands and of course the highest selling download ever is by Kings of Leon.

It's because we have a music industry and media who are obsessed with "talent" show winners and a gullible public who are willing to accept what the media tell them they should like.

There are some really great bands around, but you have to find them yourself, these days.

Well thats always been the case, but to not have a single uk band in the top 40 or just one or two at best is quite an appauling reflection on our music industry.
Of course there are great bands out there but they need to be pushing the shite off the airways.

I think the Glastonbury line up says it all really.

There needs to be anarchy in the uk again.

Why? If you look at the top three headlining acts for each day, five out of the nine are british, and four of those are bands.

There are loads of great (and loads of crap) bands out there playing their own instruments live every night of the week. You won't find many decent ones in the top 40 singles chart though as singles only seem to be bought by kids and brain dead reality TV fans these days. The current album chart, however, has Green Day, Simple Minds, Kings of Leon, Madness, Iron Maiden, Manic Street Preachers and the Killers in the top 20.

The Kings of Leon album of course being the third highest selling album of last year in Britain and the current highest selling of this year.

These bands are not new bands, where are the new bands? is it left to old codgers like Madness (who i love btw) and Iron Maiden now to hold the torch for UK music?

TBH i don't give a toss about it as i'm to old to care about todays charts i never listen to them, i spend my time going to see the bands i've always liked over the years, it just kinda shocked me that there were no bands of any note in the top 40.

Maybe Rock'n'Roll radio is finally dead.

Also Glastonbury this year is for the over 40's, all that s missing is Gerry and the Pacemakers and Engelbert Humperdink and you've got the complete set from what i've seen.

There's just no effort any more. Record labels, the big ones, just want acts to sell. They're happy with future-flops as long as in the interim they make money. They just move on to the next "big" thing soon after.

There's no time for artists to develop which is why all we seem to hear, in popular music, is middle of the road crap, stuff which has been done to death or something absolutely amazing and so fantastic you want to die for them... like Lady Gaga or Katie Perry (that was sarcasm... if you never got that).

As long as the acts I like keep making music, I'll be fine.

I wish for a proper music revolution to happen. Something that actual cares... like what Punk did, for example. Something with a culture and not just "stick me on your iPod and listen to me at the gym" crap.

Totally agree, but also regarding the TOP40, Where is the fun? i was driving for 4 hours on sunday and all i could get was the top40 on radio1 really, and it was just the dullest stuff i've ever heard in my life.
Sure the production was perfect on all the records and they all sounded nice, but christ pop music nowadays is truly awful and boring, i'm so glad i'm not 16 in 2009.
The number one called "bonkers" i think, wtf? its a complete mess of a record, you think that will get played on the radio in 10 years time? it won't get airplay ever again once its dropped out the charts.
And Fearn Cotton? she sounded more boring than the music, stick to the TV and look pretty is my advice to her.

rant over i'm going back to my music.

Oh, you're talking about new bands from the UK? Your OP just mentioned no bands being in the UK top 40, not that they had to be either new or British.

As someone in their mid-40s, I resent that remark!! What on earth has age to to do with enjoying music?

I've never really understood why the Top 40 is held up as a barometer of what people are listening to in the first place. Even when I was 16 some 30 years ago I though the same, the album chart is at least a little more representative. It doesn't help, though, that most of the big bands are either recording or touring overseas but things should start to improve as the new Placebo and Kasabian albums are due soon as well as the new Muse album in September.
