Hi all,

For the last 3yrs, I have been a proud owner of a Sony 50" dlp, and about half hour ago it finally gave it's last picture. .

I have looked in the manual on problems & it looks as tho the bulb has died. Now I can get a replacement bulb, but there are a couple of catches .

(1) Each bulb costs between £110 & £130

(2) Each bulb has on average 1yr worth of brightness on decent settings, but is only covered under warranty for 90 days .

As I have gotten use to the size of the set, it would be difficult to go to a smaller size but considering the cost of sets, the smallest I could go to would be about 42".

Now the question is that do I go for an 1080p Lcd or a 1080p Plasma ?.

Is there anyone here who could offer advice on which to get. I am not big on watching sports, but do love my movies & Xbox gaming.

Kind Regards

A Tv less DJM

If I read your post correctly, then it seems you had three years from this bulb - that's very good going for anything based on a lamp.

£110-£130 is also fairly cheap for a replacement lamp compared to most projectors. Apart from the odd exception projector lamps can be anything from £200 - £800!!

What you should be asking yourself is how much will it cost to change the set. To make some sort of judgement you'll need to weigh certain factors

Cost of a replacement TV of similar quality - say £1300 for the basic 1080p KDL-52V5500, up to £2000 for the step up model Bravia KDL-52Z4500)

What do you do with the old set?
Sell it - but who will buy a TV that needs a new bulb?..how much would they pay compared to a 50" LG @ £700 when all they want is a big cheap TV? And if you do sell it then how will it be shipped?
Or do you scrap it? - are you happy to dump a significant chunk of cash like that?
I think your best option is to put in a new bulb and use the TV for the next couple of years. At least then you'll have had some decent use from the set and the cost to change won't be so high.

Well Sony don't do DLP, it's probably an LCD rear projector, a DLP is a completely different system.

I thought they were more money than that?, and in my experience bulb life in them is usually pretty good - I've rarely ever changed one.

The Tv went in for repair in March 08 after the picture had started getting dark & as it was under warranty the shop took it away & fitted a bulb which lasted just over a year.

Well, it would have been useful to give the right info vis-a-vis the lamp from the word go. Your statement "on average 1yr worth of brightness on decent settings" can be interpreted in different ways.

The lamps do appear to be around £100. (SONY XL2400) At least on Ebay, for the lamp only I think.

Personally, if I was fairly sure it was just the lamp and I had been happy with the TV, I would get a lamp and get another years use.

In a year the 50" plasma screens will be a lot cheaper as well.
