Considering an iPod Touch. Help Please.

It's not often that I frequent this area of the forum, but hope some of you may be able to help.

I'm looking to buy my GF an iPod Touch (8gb), but not being remotely familiar with any of Apple's product I have a number of queries before I commit:

1) Can the iPod Touch be synchronised with Windows Media Player?

2) I have vast library of music on a Vista Laptop, all nicely filed with music details such as track numbers, release dates, artist names and album art. All files are DRM free, and in MP3 format. Will I be able to sync these with the iPod or will it only support those that are bought through iTunes?

3) Is installation of iTunes essential?

4) As my GF and I live seperatley, I have her laptop set up to automatically recognise both my wireless network and hers, automatically, without configuration. Will the iPod allow configuation of multiple accounts and automatic switching, or does it need to be setup each time?

5) What is the average installation size of a typical application on the iPod?

6) Are all iPod apps paid for or is freeware available?

8) Does the iPod now support Flash?

9) How does the iPod recharge? is it USB or Mains power?

10) What video files are supported by the iPod?

Sorry if any of my questions are a bit dumb, but I'm more used to entry level drag and drop type MP3 players, and Windows. Any advise and things to look out for would be very helpful. I've tried googling these questions, but not had much luck or have had conflicting advise. A real users help would be good.

No, not the latest models I believe, there was a plug in for the older models but you won't be able to transfer apps in WMP.

2) I have vast library of music on a Vista Laptop, all nicely filed with music details such as track numbers, release dates, artist names and album art. All files are DRM free, and in MP3 format. The iPod will support all MP3 files, and transfer your tag details, then they can be synced with the iPod.

3) Is installation of iTunes essential?

Yes

4) As my GF and I live seperatley, I have her laptop set up to automatically recognise both my wireless network and hers, automatically, without configuration. Will the iPod allow configuation of multiple accounts and automatic switching, or does it need to be setup each time?

Are you asking whether you can use your iPod on both laptops, yes its possible. When you first set the iPod up, make sure you have the "Manually manage music and videos" section ticked, this way you can use both laptops to transfer songs. Your iPod's Wi-Fi should work in the way you want it to, by connecting to the appropriate network whenever it is in range, however even if it doesn't selecting the network takes a matter of seconds

5) What is the average installation size of a typical application on the iPod?

Most are under 20MB

6) Are all iPod apps paid for or is freeware available?

Loads of free ones, price range from £0 to £5

8) Does the iPod now support Flash?

No.

9) How does the iPod recharge? is it USB or Mains power?

Both

10) What video files are supported by the iPod?

MPEG-4 Video file with H.264 video codec and AAC/MP3 audio

Thanks buddy.

Just to clarify the Wifi issue.

I understand that the iPod touch is WiFi enabled. Both my my GF's home and mine have a a wireless network. I would like her to be able to access both wireless networks with zero configuration.

So when she visits her iPod automatically recognises my network, and when back at hers, likewise. This without having to type in passwords and configure the network connection. A little like on a laptop.

Is that feasible?

Edit: Sorry, I think cloakroom99 has answered this now.

Is internet on the iPod any good or cut down like on WAP?

Are there any other comparable products that I should consider before committing?

I'm a bit worried about haveing iTunes on the laptop. Do Apple bombard you with hundreds of Apple apple apps and updates, and start to dominate your PC?

I'm not hugely keen on Quicktime and Safari, that's all.

If I sync the iPod with my current existing DRM free music, will it impose future restrictions or limitations to my collection?

Its the web as on a computer. You just tap and the text zooms to fit the screen. You use two fingers to zoom in and out and one to drag to another part of the page. Its the best mobile web option at the moment. I love using it and I look at websites every day on my ipod touch gen 1.

TBH no other product does the web, video, music and games as well in one product.

Itunes will never bombard you with apple updates. I think Itunes asks you if you want to install Quicktime when it installs but thats it. You can turn off auto update anyway.

Itunes does run a bit better on a mac but I would not let that put you off if you run windows.

On the 1st page on your ipod touch it will tell you if any of the apps you have need to be updated.

All music you can buy on Itunes is DRM free. No restrictions in the future for your music.

One thing to remember is Apple updates the Ipod range every September so a better spec Ipod Touch could come out then for the same price.

Thanks for your help.

I've just bought an 8GB Refurb from the Apple Store for £129. Hopefully if Quidco tracks It should have cost me about £125.

I just hope the GF likes it. I want to have it all loaded up with her music for her, as she's probably expecting some CD's.

Is there a good value FM Transmitter that can be recommended for use in the car?

I'm assuming it's a 2G touch? If so, it has a transmitter built in; not activated yet but rumours have it that the next OS update (3.0) will enable this along with the bluetooth functionality.

Yep, it's the 2nd gen that I've now bought for my GF. Sounds like the firmware updates they deploy are quite significant.

Internal BT and FM would be brilliant. Any idea on dates?

No one knows for sure but on the 8th June at 6pm GMT apple will be presenting at the WWDC conference.

We will find out a lot more then.

We expect the new Iphones to be anounced and the date of the 3.0 firmware along with more details on what it can do.
