The Pulse
Huddersfield Town 7-1 Brighton and Hove Albion
commentator: Tim Thornton
Summariser: Michael Collins
Bradford City 0-0 Lincoln City
Reporter: Jason Thornton

BBC Radio Leeds

(92.4, 95.3 and 102.7 FM)
Huddersfield Town 7-1 Brighton and Hove Albion
Commentator: Paul Ogdon
Summariser: Kieran O'Regan

(103.9 FM, 774 AM, DAB and online)
Walsall 1-2 Leeds United
Coverage: Adam Pope and Andie Ritchie
Bradford City 0-0 Lincoln City:
Coverage: Derm Tanner

Notes and Comments

Kieran O'Regan was on BBC Southern Counties Radio before the match between Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion began, because of his connection to Brighton and Hove Albion.

I think Jason Thornton used to present a show with Tim Thornton on Teamtalk 252 in 2002. I also think they are brothers.

Michael Collins's suspention ended tonight, so I think it is very likely that a different person will be summarising for the Pulse when they next commentate on Huddersfield Town. I wonder if Tim Thornton sounded excited after Huddersfield Town were 7-1 up?

Pennine FM had reporters (including Matt) at the Galpharm Stadium but I didn't hear much of their coverage, just a half-time report. I hope they continued to use highlights instead of reports.

That means I might not be able to catch any of the BRMB, Beacon, Gold, Mercia or BBC WM coverage of the midweek football, and so won't be able to post details on here later in the week.

If anyone could listen out to Tuesday and Wednesday's coverage I'd appreciate it - although I should be back in town to hear how the Midland stations cover Aston Villa's trip to the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium to face Rapid Vienna on Thursday.
Seeing as no-one was able to help out earlier in the week, moving back to Tuesday night (set off later than expected so was able to hear some of the WM/Orion coverage, plus I have details of coverage I heard while on my travels).

Tuesday 18th August

BBC WM

Mark Regan presenting WM Sport from the DW Stadium

Premier League
Wigan Athletic v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Mike Taylor and Mark Regan (commentary)

Championship
Peterborough United v West Bromwich Albion - Andrew Dawkins

League One
Walsall v Leeds United - Dan Wheeler

Beacon 97.2/Mercia FM/Gold 990AM

Tom Ross hosting The Goal Zone from the DW Stadium

Premier League
Wigan Athletic v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Tom Ross and Robbie Dennison (Beacon commentary)

Championship
Doncaster Rovers v Coventry City - Joe Holt and Dave Bennett (Mercia commentary)
Peterborough United v West Bromwich Albion - Nathan Alleyne and Tony Brown (Gold 990AM commentary)

Minster FM/Yorkshire Radio

Thom Kirwin presenting The Match Day Programme from the Bescot Stadium

League One
Walsall v Leeds United - Thom Kirwin and Eddie Gray (commentary)

BBC Radio Leeds

(103.9 FM, 774 AM, DAB and online)
Walsall 1-2 Leeds United
Coverage: Adam Pope and Andie Ritchie
Caught about five minutes of this, and was hoping you could shed some light on what was going on.

During the passage of play I caught (early in the second half) the commentators, rather than talk about the match, instead read out the text messages and e-mails, gave out the station's contact details, played commentary of a goal from the Huddersfield game, updated the other scores and generally chatted about other things. Not once did I hear them actually commentate on the action in front of them.

I didn't stick around to work out what was going on but did Radio Leeds not have accreditation to do commentary on this match? I notice you typed "coverage" rather than "commentary". It was a very strange listen.

Thanks JamSir.

Just for completeness, it was Dan Wheeler (as commentator) and Jack Woodward (as summariser) out in Vienna for people interested in their respective roles.

I appreciate the details from the commercial stations - I tuned in to BRMB for a short while but didn't hear a reporter so was wondering if they'd given it a miss.

Didn't hear any of The Sports Bar on Gold, did Tom Ross touch upon the match I wonder? The first half was taking place while he would have been on air.

Out of interest JamSir (or anyone else) - do you have any details of WM/BRMB's coverage of Birmingham City v Portsmouth last night?

I imagine Tom Ross and Jon McCarthy would have been the BRMB commentary team, but have no clue who was there for WM.

I'll be unable to do the talkSPORT reporters for tomorrow night and should be alright to do them on Saturday whilst at work.
Thursday 20th August - talkSPORT

Danny Kelly presenting Kick-Off alongside Darren Gough

UEFA Europa League Qualifying Play-Offs first leg
Dinamo Zagreb v Hearts - Mark Donaldson
Everton v Sigma Olomouc - Simon Humphreys
Fulham v Amkar Perm - Mike Bovill
Rapid Vienna v Aston Villa - Nigel Pearson
Steaua Bucuresti v St Patricks Athletic - Richard Sadlier

Richard Sadlier is the CEO of St Patricks Athletic. Believe it or not, he was actually reporting (as in filing in-progress updates) on the match as well as being an over the phone interview guest for Danny Kelly. A nice coup for talkSPORT there.

Former Setanta Sports News presenter Rachel Brookes is reading the news on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT this morning.

Rachel was the weekday morning sports newsreader on talkSPORT in 2006, before moving onto Sky Sports News as a cricket reporter and then Setanta Sports News as one of their main afternoon presenters.

I wonder if they'll call upon her as a sports reporter. talkSPORT probably has the broadest team of football reporters on the radio, with correspondents based in almost every region of the country, but one area where they don't have a reporter is Rachel's native South Coast.

I didn't stick around to work out what was going on but did Radio Leeds not have accreditation to do commentary on this match? I notice you typed "coverage" rather than "commentary". It was a very strange listen.
Radio Leeds lost the commentary rights to Leeds United's league, League Cup and JP Trophy matches last season. They can only commentate on FA Cup and Play-off matches, as well as Leeds United's matches against Huddersfield Town, and home matches against Bradford City in the League Cup and JP Trophy.

This season, along with the Pulse, they lost the rights to Bradford City's home matches in the league, League Cup and JP Trophy, but can still commentate on away matches in those competitions, home matches in the League Cup and JP Trophy against Huddersfield Town, and FACup and Play-off matches.

Before the Leeds United commentary rights were lost, there was commentary on their matches on FM. Huddersfield and Bradford shared 774 AM, with one team getting extended commentary on DAB.

Since the rights losses, Radio Leeds has broadcast reports on Leeds United's matches on 103.9 FM and online when Huddersfield Town and Bradford City were playing. Last season and this season when Bradford are away, Huddersfield Town's matches are on 92.4, 95.3 and 102.7 FM, while Bradford are on 774 AM and DAB.

Between the reports, the commentary team has discussed other matters (including matters relevant to the club) and read texts. This is easier when Leeds are away from home, as Leeds United have not allowed Radio Leeds to broadcast live from the ground except for the in-match reports. This means somebody in the studio has to talk for 45 minutes per half, only broken up by reports and any other sports-related audio he can insert into the programme. Andy Ritchie and Adam Pope are live in the Peacock pub before and after home matches, and Adam Pope has had to go there to do the half-time report.

As a result of losing home commentary rights for Bradford City, when Bradford are at home, 774 AM and DAB broadcast build-up to the match. Meanwhile, the build-up to Leeds and Huddersfield is on FM and online. From 5-10 minutes before the matches begin, 774 AM and DAB join the 103.9 coverage, which consists of reports on Leeds United and Bradford City's matches, plus texts and discussion of other matters (including matters relevant to the clubs), but not commentary.

This is the right solution, because 103.9 FM can only be heard in West Leeds and Pudsey, whereas 774 can be heard in most of West Yorkshire, especially in Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and North Kirklees (Dewsbury and Batley). Huddersfield Town inserts are only added to this coverage to fill time. The Huddersfield Town commentary is unaffected on 92.4, 95.3 and 102.7 FM, though sometimes Paul Ogdon will provide some quick report during the commentary for the benefit of 103.9 FM listeners.

I wasn't listening to the radio due to being at Huddersfield Town's match on Tuesday, except at half-time before and after the match. I noticed that Pulse Sport ended by 10 PM, where as West Yorkshire Sport on Radio Leeds finished by 10:30.

I am at home this Saturday, and will post details on the coverage of teams in West Yorkshire, including whether the Pulse and Pennine FM have reporters at the Huddersfield Town match against Bristol Rovers. Bradford City are away so they will be on the Pulse and on Radio Leeds AM/DAB.

No commentary disappointingly.

Peter Slater was at Everton
Jacqui Oatley at Fulham
John Southall with Aston Villa
Not sure about Hearts
