4-4-2 - Wasn't really looking for an argument at all!

I read that line of the post in question as if it was suggesting that those three presenters were "new talent", and so straightened that out as I saw it.

Sorry for the misinterpretation of words there.

Did he? I don't recall he was used any less during 2005/06 than he was in immediate previous seasons, but then again I was surprised to find out he hasn't reported on talkSPORT at all since last March.

One thing I do remember was how Jim Proudfoot returned to talkSPORT to commentate on the 2006 World Cup (including the final), having only reappeared on the station to commentate on a 1089am Premier League commentary with just a few weeks left of the domestic season, having not commentated on any game until that point in 2005/06 or at all during 2004/05.

Going on that alone you are probably totally right, form counts for nothing if the people at the top at TS rate you and you are available. I certainly hope so anyway as I rate Tim as a commentator.

By the way, thanks for the details about Sportsmedia's plans for the World Cup.

Elsewhere, and I know this is a little bit after the lord mayor's show now, but for those interested BRMB produced a superb YouTube trailer ahead of their coverage of Sunday's Second City Derby, voiced by the inimitable Tom Ross, which is well worth a look IMO.

Just quick heads up for tomorrow, I'm off out to a game here in the Midlands, so won't be posting during the afternoon.

Nevertheless, I should be able to post details of the coverage teams used by BBC WM and the Orion Media stations at some point in the evening/on Sunday, however talkSPORT could be a bit of a stretch so if someone could sub for me (and 4-4-2 if he isn't able to post the details) it would be much appreciated.

Going into the weekend's matches, I have some pre-released details of BBC WM's commentary and reporting team courtesy of The Big Pie.

Saturday
Hull City v Birmingham City - Mark Regan and Paul Franks (95.6FM commentary, also on BRMB)
Aston Villa v Portsmouth - ? (likely to be Mike Taylor or Richard Wilford with Daz Hale, DAB commentary, also on Gold 1152AM)
Middlesbrough v West Bromwich Albion - Andrew Dawkins (reports, commentary on Beacon Radio)
Walsall v Swindon Town - Rob Gurney (reports)

Sunday
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Fulham - Dan Wheeler and Daz Hale (commentary, also on Beacon Radio)

I know I had a little moan at Five Live for dumping the Second City Derby onto Sports Extra last week, but this one really is shocking (Five Live management's decision making that is, not your post Shaun!).

At least Blues-Villa made way for live sport, given the programming United-Wednesday was demoted onto Sports Extra for makes this decision even more baffling.

To dump the Steel City Derby, which turned out to be one of the games of the season by all accounts, onto a DAB only station while the so-called "Home of Live Sport" airs chatter between an ex-Radio 1 DJ and the guy who used to present Soccer AM is absolutely appalling scheduling. Really really poor stuff by Five Live.

I completely agree. Had the Manchester derby took place last night they wouldn't have put that on Sports Extra, and its not as if there isn't enough analysis on 5 Live.

I think that 5 Live or Sports Extra should take the local radio commentary on derbies. They have done that with the Sheffield derby before, but they didn't last night. The commentary on Sports Extra was very dull in comparison to that offered by Radio Sheffield. Wouldn't it be great if they could do a Championship commentary without mentioning the Premiership.

I remember once when I wasn't in West Yorkshire, Huddersfield Town were playing Bradford City in League 1. Leeds United were still in the Championship at this point it may have been the 2004-2005 season. Anyway I wanted to listen to the match. There was nothing on Sports Extra at all and there was no live commentary on 5 Live either. They chose analysis over live football just because it wasn't a Premiership match.

Their treatment of the Football League is a disgrace. I just wish a new commercial station would come along and challenge them for the rights, then give us the coverage we deserve.

Football details for West Yorkshire to follow by 4 PM today and by 2 PM tomorrow.

I don't believe it should be up to a commercial radio station to provide coverage of the Football League on a national level - it should be on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Whether you like it not, there's probably not the commercially viable audience for Football League matches on a station such as talkSPORT. Since Talk Radio had the rights in 1997-1998, there's been hardly any Football League commentaries on the station apart from the Play-Off Finals over the past three years.

However, there is probably a big enough audience to justify live coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live on a more regular basis instead of a preview show.

Commercial radio are already providing a preview show and chat (Matchday Live with Danny Kelly, Matt Holland and Neil Ashton on talkSPORT last night) so BBC Radio 5 Live should be doing what their tagline is: live news and live sport - therefore live coverage of the Sheffield derby.

Yes, I agree. The fact that TalkSport (or Talk Radio as it then was) let the rights go after a season probably shows that it doesn't fit into a commercial environment. On the other hand, commentaries on football below the PL is just what a public service broadcaster should be doing - though to give Five Live their due credit, they use Sports Extra regularly to broadcast Championship commentaries on Champions' League nights and on Saturday 3pm games, times when even the biggest Championship fan (and I support a Championship team myself) would surely concede they shouldn't be on Five Live itself. This would never have been possible, and it's what Sports Extra is there for. Friday night is a different matter - Five Live used to have regular commentaries when games in the Nationwide League, as it then was, were played on that night almost every week (as they probably will be again next season).
