BBC WM WM Sport hosted by Paul Franks at White Hart Lane (2-5pm) and Richard Wilford at Old Trafford (5-8pm) Premier League Manchester United v Aston Villa - Mike Taylor and Richard Wilford (5.30pm commentary on 95.6FM and DAB)* *Ron Atkinson was originally due to be WM's co-commentator at Old Trafford, but a sore throat has ruled him out According to yesterday's Big Pie newsletter, the trio of Mike, Richard and Ron Atkinson had been pencilled in to be WM's team at Old Trafford - perhaps Richard was originally drafted in just in case Mike still hadn't recovered from his illness, and as it happens he's actually covering for Big Ron who apparently has lost his voice! |

Correction - it's actually Mike Taylor presenting (from 5.15pm) and co-commentating on this one, with Richard Wilford as the main commentator.

A request - I'm going to be outside of the Midlands for most of this coming week, so in my absence would somebody be able to post the details of the BBC WM and the Orion Media (that's BRMB, Beacon and Gold) stations' commentaries?
The relevant games will be West Brom v QPR (commentary on Beacon and Gold 1152AM, reports only on BBC WM) tomorrow night; and then on Tuesday it's Birmingham v Blackburn (commentary on Gold 1152AM and WM on DAB in Birmingham), Manchester United v Wolves (Beacon and WM on DAB in Wolverhampton) and Sunderland v Aston Villa (BRMB and WM on FM). If someone could fill in for me it would be very much appreciated.

Next Sunday 5Live have full comm of Newc vs 'Boro and then the final 30 mins of Wolves vs Burnley Newcastle v Middlesbrough is a huge match, not only is it a local derby (of sorts) but it's got big implications when it comes to the Championship promotion picture. As that game kicks off earlier than Wolves v Burnley (which is not quite as big in terms of the Premier League relegation battle IMO), doing full commentary from St James' Park and then most of the second half from Molineux makes good sense - I presume the live cricket is the reason why (part of) one of those games isn't on Sports Extra. Nice to see Five Live putting the Football League first for a change. ![]() Also, to confirm it was David Oates who was Five Live's opening commentator at Stoke v Wigan yesterday. |

The only issue I would see is that the FL game is on BBC One (or maybe Two, not sure) so everyone has access but it is a bigger game despite not being a PL game.
And the cricket is on Sports Extra so there's no room on that, shame there isn't a facility on the TV red button for an extra football commentary + online, then virtually evertybody could hear/see both games if they wanted to. What would have happened if it was Wolves vs Big 4? |

I'm interested to see what BBC WM will do next Sunday - there will be a slight overlap between Wolves v Burnley (1.30pm kick-off) and Everton v Birmingham (3pm) so I wonder if DAB will come into play albeit for 15/20 minutes. Quote:

Next Sunday 5Live have full comm of Newc vs 'Boro and then the final 30 mins of Wolves vs Burnley One thing that really annoys me about Championship commentaries on 5 Live is the references to the Premier League. They promoted the midweek games but then wanted to do a bit of analysis of them. Why don't they tell us what we want to know when we tune in for a commentary... what's happening on the pitch. This happens on Premiership commentaries too. One notable example a few seasons ago was Sheffield United's match against Chelsea. Radio Sheffield had problems with their line so temporarily they broadcast the 5 Live commentary, where the team were going on about next week's Champions League. I find a lot of 5 Live's commentaries very dull listening. |

Could be interesting if Wigan can get a result at Anfield on Wednesday. |

According to the Middlesbrough Match programme, Andy Campbell was supposed to be a Match sumariser.
I guess you didn't hear him when you tuned in? There's a chance Andy Campbell may have been a guest pundit as part of a separate presenting team on the FM coverage, although with the football and rugby taking place around the same time but with different kick-offs, it would make sense that Rob was doing the links on both the FM and AM output. IRN Paul Anthony Premier League Radio Dave Farrar and Efan Ekoku (commentary) BBC London 94.9 Mark Taylor I find it quite surprising that it doesn't appear a London station did commentary on Liverpool v Arsenal yesterday. Do any ILR station(s) in the capital hold commentary rights to Arsenal instead of BBC London? Also, will anybody be doing commentary on FC Basel v Fulham on Wednesday? With the game being on ESPN I'd be keen to listen - ideally BBC London will be there, and their commentary could be put on Sports Extra between the end of the cricket and the evening Premier League game. Ian (or anyone else who knows), what's the current situation when it comes to the radio football coverage in London these days? Are BBC London the only player left in the market since Capital, Smooth and talkSPORT all pulled out of their regional commentaries? I've not noticed them doing any Fulham Premier League games (apart from those against the 3 mentioned above) but they are doing Basle v Fulham which will be available online via the link @ http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/front_page/7870424.stm Whilst on the subject why are BBC London allowed to broadcast all their commentaries online but every other BBC station doesn't have that privelege? |

I don't think Arsenal commentaries have been aired on Radio in London since Capital dropped coverage? Or did they air on Talksport for a bit after? Not my region so I don't know but I think BBC London are the sole broadcaster but only cover Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham plus some non Premier League sides.
London must be strange in that no commercial station covers football live. |
