Why do five live and talksport have reporters at a reserve match? Is this normal?

A minor correction here - West Ham's Reserves were the home team last night.

Incidentally, talkSPORT were the first to break the news that Arsenal had taken Sol Campbell on trial, with Andrew McKenna announcing what was then a rumour during one of his bulletins on Hawksbee & Jacobs.

I think it has done the rounds on a number of BBC Local Radio stations (did it make Five Live as well?).

They played an edit of Robbie's Rant during Paul Franks' BBC WM drivetime show after 6.30pm, with Franksy likening Colin Gibson to "Radio Derby's version of Mark Regan."

It even made talkSPORT - Hawksbee & Jacobs interviewed Ram FM's Derby County reporter Phil Matthews about the situation, albeit skilfully avoiding any reference to BBC Radio Derby as being the source of Sav's anger (Ram FM got a couple of national radio mentions though).

Over on Radio Derby, on Sport from Six Colin Bloomfield was taking calls and texts about Robbie Savage's comments about himself and Gibson.

On that - I had a chuckle about how it was a bit of a baptism of fire for Ed Dawes, with him standing in for Bloomfield as commentator and post-match interviewer for Radio Derby at Pride Park last night.

The reason why Bloomfield didn't do the commentary on Derby-Millwall last night was because 1) he was filling in for Phil Trow, who is covering on the Radio Derby Breakfast Show this week, on Sport from Six and 2) he has a cold. There's nothing more to it than that.

Marc Vesty had been their usual second choice as Rams commentator, but I think he might have moved on now - he writes a lot of articles on the BBC Sport website and I noticed he was listed as a researcher on the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year show - so Dawes, who reported on an Albion game for BBC WM earlier in the season, got the call.

Bob Ballard presenting Sports Extra Football

FA Cup Third Round Replay
Newcastle United v Plymouth Argyle - Nigel Adderley and Steve Stone (commentary)

I was flicking around during the commercials at half-time in the Liverpool-Reading game, so I don't know if they used another commentator (if so, then Adderley would have done the "opening" leg of each half). Given that Sports Extra generally use commentary tandems these days, I think it's unlikely they would have.

They've since updated this trailer to include references to it being Brian Laws' first game in charge of Burnley.

The new trailer says talkSPORT's Matchday Live team this Saturday will be Adrian Durham, Nigel Pearson, Bobby Gould and Ray Parlour.

So Stan Collymore is still on holiday, but it doesn't mention who'll be co-commentating in his absence - it could be either ex-pro, as Gould was pencilled in to summarise last weekend before the postponement and I think Parlour did co-commentary on at least one Champions League Live game last term.

I'll be at Glandford Park tomorrow for Scunthorpe United V Cardiff City, so will be able to do BBC Humberside and Real Radio Yorkshire.

I might go 'Old Skool' and take my Personal Stereo (I'm making a long, long train journey) so could get BBC Lincolnshire as well.

If any of the stations mentioned could let me know how the Cardiff Blues fair tomorrow against Sale in the Heineken Cup that would be much appreciated

That's good to know, thanks for sharing that George.

On the subject of talkSPORT, I've been thinking about their postponed game from last weekend and how they are going to make up their quota of 32 games.

As it stands, Sunderland v Bolton has yet to be rescheduled - although with Sunderland still in the FA Cup, I think it's likely they might opt for a midweek date. If the rearranged game clashes with Champions League matches, then that'd be no good for talkSPORT who are likely to already be covering a live game from that competition.

However next Saturday, which is FA Cup fourth round Saturday, I see Manchester United v Hull City in the Premier League has been pencilled in as a 3pm kick-off, what with both teams having been knocked out in the third round.

With the omens on both Five Live and Sports Extra to be broadcasting FA Cup games at that time, especially in light of the BBC Trust's verdict that Five Live bosses must intend to provide their listeners "value for money" after the station's "aggressive pursuit" of exclusive radio rights to the FA Cup, you would hope that the Manchester United-Hull City game would be available for talkSPORT to provide a commentary on seeing as though the BBC have locked them out of doing FA Cup commentaries.

If this should happen, then listeners would have a choice of three national radio football commentaries with talkSPORT's problem regarding their missing game being resolved.

That's a shame - he was the only regular Five Live Sport presenter who I rated once Mark Saggers had left the station.

Will Arlo still be part of Five Live/Sports Extra's NFL coverage through to the Superbowl? I hope so, he has been excellent on that this season.

EDIT: I've just seen in another thread that Arlo is off to Seattle to present coverage of Seattle Sounders games. I remember reading he had made a good impression while doing a TV commentary on one of their MLS games during the summer, so this makes sense.
