BBC WM

Paul Franks presenting WM Sport from Molineux

Premier League
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Wigan Athletic - Rob Gurney and Paul Franks (FM and DAB commentary), with Jane France interviewing the fans

League One
Walsall v Brighton & Hove Albion - Dan Wheeler, with Mick Kearns providing half and full time analysis

According to The Big Pie, had Portsmouth v Birmingham City gone ahead it would have been the FM and DAB in Birmingham commentary with Rob Gurney and, I presume, Paul Franks.

Dan Wheeler had initially been pencilled in as the commentator on Wolves v Wigan with Andrew Dawkins the reporter at Walsall according to yesterday's newsletter, so I'm guessing WM must have had a late reshuffle of their personnel after the Blues game went this morning.

Commentary on Wolves v Wigan was originally only due to be available via DAB in Wolverhampton before the postponement at Fratton Park.

Beacon 97.2FM & 103.1FM/Mercia FM

Tom Ross presenting The Goalzone from BRMB's Brindley Place studios

Premier League
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Wigan Athletic - Bill Hatton and Keith Downing (Beacon commentary)

Championship
Ipswich Town v Coventry City - Joe Holt and Dave Bennett (Mercia commentary)

As confirmed on last night's Friday Football Phone-In (not the Sports Bar!), Tom was due to be commentating on Pompey v Blues for BRMB alongside Jon McCarthy before the postponement.

I am listening on Beacon Shropshire's internet stream at the moment, and just to confirm not only are they taking Beacon 97.2FM's commentary on Wolves v Wigan this afternoon but they are also taking the Tom Ross fronted build-up hour (dubbed Shropshire's Goalzone) - I guess their Wolves coverage will be fully networked.

In contrast, with no commentary game BRMB are taking a music programme.

Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of talkSPORT's launch. So it's nice that Adrian Durham, Nigel Pearson, Dom McGuinness, Andy Clarke, Geoff Peters, Rupert Bell and Jack Bannister are all involved today, as they were all part of the station's live sports coverage when it began in 2000.

Also involved is Ian Abrahams who, although he didn't join the station until much later, reported on the first ever Saturday Football First on talkSPORT via IRN. Injured Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon joins him at Stamford Bridge today.

In their tenth anniversary weekend, talkSPORT had some good fortune today as...

Spoiler
BBC Five Live were lumbered with Chelsea v Sunderland as their 3pm commentary, which was over as a contest early on with Chelsea going into half time leading 4-0. I am sure listeners will have been turning over in their droves, many to the much closer Manchester United v Burnley game which was live on talkSPORT.

Also, during their commentary from Old Trafford, Nigel Pearson confirmed that talkSPORT will be doing commentary on Manchester United v Hull City next Saturday, the only Premier League game taking place during FA Cup fourth round weekend.

Bradford City's match was postponed. However, for the first time this season in the league, Bradford City will be away and Huddersfield Town will be at home on Tuesday night. It will be interesting to see if Pulse Sport provides commentary on both matches. If it doesn't, I think there will be commentary on Huddersfield Town's match.

I think Burton were once covered by Radio Stoke, BBC WM and Radio Derby. I know in the 1990s, Wigan were covered by Magic 1152, Magic 999, and Radio City.

An interesting fact regarding Watford coverage, is that though they are covered by BBC London and BBC Three Counties, the regional Late Kick Off show that goes out in East England, where the three counties are, will not cover Watford.

BBC Three Counties covers an area that includes quite a few people who get their TV from Crystal Palace - including Watford. Luton is on the border of the London and East TV areas - and is covered by both. I suspect, too, that some of their listeners in Buckinghamshire get their TV from BBC Oxford.

The Wycombe v Charlton match would not have been on BBC Essex, and I think that should have been on the BBC Three Counties section, as Euan Duncan is one of the main reporters and was there for BBC Three Counties today

In answer to an earlier post, BBC London and BBC Kent share the same reporter for Charlton games. BBC Three Counties Radio have John Marks and Neil Price present at every Watford game whilst BBC London sends its own reporter to Watford games.

Dagenham and Redbridge is not covered by BBC London but is by BBC Essex (usually Stewart Smith as the reporter).

Wycombe Wanderers is not particularly well covered by its BBC Local Radio station (BBC Three Counties Radio) which only does previews, half-time and full-time reports by the club's commentator or summariser.

West Ham used to be covered by BBC Essex on its 765AM wavelength but now is only covered by BBC London.

Adam Wilde *I think* was doing the Sports News. Off the bits I listen to from the railway station to the ground, David and 'Swannie' were telling listeners of what they both got up to in their nearby hotel on Friday Night, including an update on David's dietary programme.

I could get BBC Lincolnshire, but Classic FM and BBC Sheffield were bleeding over the top of it (on 94.9FM anyway).

I know it sounds like I always disagree with you but... I disagree, I can't see how a match with nine goals could be a turn-off. I know they abandoned Chelsea vs Watford the other week at 4-0, but that was an obvious win against a weak Championship side with Chelsea not even having to get out of second gear, while this was a proper rout with Chelsea thrashing a supposed equal. In fact it sounded like they were on for a record. Meanwhile Man U vs Burnley was always going to end one way, even if it stayed 0-0 for a bit.

To emphasise this, Chelsea vs Sunderland was chosen as the main game on both Match of the Day and Football First, and given how rarely the latter can choose Man U as the main game, that has to say something.

Anyway, I dunno how many people at 3pm on Saturday are going to be switching around, because the commentary is only half the point then, there's also all the reports, and if the main match is dull, they've got other stuff to talk about, That's presumably why John Murray does it nine times out of ten, because it's a different type of job, more like presenting than commentating.

I have Liverpool leanings but I'd always listen to the 3pm kick-off on Five Live regardless of the match, even if Liverpool is on talkSPORT or before that Sports Extra, because I want to keep up to date with everything, not just one match, and also because I really like John Murray doing this.

The only time I don't listen to Five Live on Saturday afternoons is when they have rugby which I wish they wouldn't do as the rugby's always on telly whereas the football never is, so it should always take priority. But I don't listen to talkSPORT then either, I just turn the sound up on Soccer Saturday.

I didn't listen but apparently Robbie Savage got smacked flush in the face, drawing blood, during the commentary from a Stiliyan Petrov clearance. Created "much amusement" in the commentary area.

I agree Steve, John Murray is fantastic and a world above anything TalkSport have to offer. I don't think many would have re-tuned either due to the reasosn you offer above.

And it's 6Nations time soon which means no footie on 5Live
