In general I'd agree, but ASDA have gone up in my estimations since they began stocking Dave's Insanity sauces.
That said, they're not Britain's cheapest supermarket because they sell the same quality product for less, there HAS to be concessions all the way down the supply chain.
I have absolutely no way of backing what I am about to say up other than my own perception; but my interpretation is that even big name brands supply an inferior quality of product to ADSA at a lower price than they supply their "usual" quality of product to, for sake of argument, Sainsbury's or Waitrose.
Manufacturers are able to quality control their ingredients on the way in; and their systems are able to follow that quality through to their end product.
For example, if Heniz decided that a particular delivery of beans was "below par", no problem, they'll bake them - as Heinz Baked Beans - but they'll go to ASDA rather than Waitrose.
