I have noticed when buying various brands of semi skimmed milk the Asda own brand stuff is not as nice tasting as Tesco's, Robert Wiseman's etc.

Has anyone else noticed this? I've started buying the Bowland brand milk they sell which is made in Lancashire instead and is only slightly dearer.

I found that last year at our branch of Asda, so I bought the locally produced milk in there. However, since they upped the coldness in the dairy aisle it is okay again. It must be to do with the refrigeration.

It lasts ages in the fridge but it is just not as creamy or tasty as other brands. It's noticeable even in coffee.

No idea but I do find that a lot of Asda brand goods have 'utter crap' ingredients.

Every supermarket is a 'mixed bag' but Asda has the highest 'utter crap' rating for me.
Methinks thay rely on that fact that shoppers are too busy to read the ingredient list.

Oh... so that Bowland is only avaliable in Asdas in Lancashire according to that website.

Your local Asda should have alternative local milk brands.

Nope, it was not in any of the Asdas near me.

In general I'd agree, but ASDA have gone up in my estimations since they began stocking Dave's Insanity sauces.

That said, they're not Britain's cheapest supermarket because they sell the same quality product for less, there HAS to be concessions all the way down the supply chain.

I have absolutely no way of backing what I am about to say up other than my own perception; but my interpretation is that even big name brands supply an inferior quality of product to ADSA at a lower price than they supply their "usual" quality of product to, for sake of argument, Sainsbury's or Waitrose.

Manufacturers are able to quality control their ingredients on the way in; and their systems are able to follow that quality through to their end product.

For example, if Heniz decided that a particular delivery of beans was "below par", no problem, they'll bake them - as Heinz Baked Beans - but they'll go to ASDA rather than Waitrose.

I thought it was just me!!! I stopped buying tesco milk for the same reason. It lasts ages but somehow taste's a bit soapy to me. I live up north and buy Booth's milk now and only buy other brands if I really have to! cumbria and north yorks stocks bowland fresh as well as lancashire...

Asda Milk is exactly the same price as Tesco and Sainsburys though so there's no excuse. I absent mindedly picked up more of it last night instead of buying the Bowland Milk so I'm stuck with it for another few weeks..

Well, considering each delivery usually has a couple of bottles of milk in Morrisons/Tesco packaging accidently mixed in, you don't have to be as cynical as me to work it out.

Asda in Stockport sell it.

It tastes quite watered down to me.

We switched to Cravendale a couple of years back, and we've stuck with it ever since - tastes good, and has long 'use by' dates, so it is worth its price premium.

I'm going to do a taste test as I have some Tesco and Asda semi skimmed milk here.

The Tesco is definitely better. The Asda is less creamy and has a slight harsh aftertaste.

I always get it straight from the farm before it goes into the system - real milk with all the goodness intact, not 'pasteurised' or homogenised or whatever else they do to it to make it white dead liquid. It doesn't go putrid like messed about milk either, it just goes gently sour - perfect for cooking with.

Does your local Asda sell Arla milk? That tastes better than the Asda own brand and is cheaper as well: £1.06 for 2 Litres (Arla are the Leeds based company that produce Cravendale).
