Dessert Ideas !

I have my boyfriends parents coming over for a meal this weekend, and they think I am totally inept so I really want to make an impressive meal.

I've already decided on the main course, which will be Pasta with Sweet Tomato Sauce, Goats Cheese and Watercress.

I just need help with the dessert! We've just moved into our house, well I say just it's been a while but I still haven't unpacked my cookery books so i'm stumped!

If anyone has any ideas of something that I can perhaps prepare mainly in advance etc and will look/taste fantastic I would really appreciate it

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Pavlova always goes down well, is simple to make and looks great. You could make a large one or individual portions??

I am not big on desserts myself - if I am having guests I normally buy them prepared (Gu do some fantastic one's!!) or do something really simple like strawberries and cream {had that last night and it was delish} or strawberries dipped in melted chocolate!!

You've got a nice light main so I would go for something summery and light (especially if the weather is nice!) like a pear tart/lemon tart or a summer pudding. I have to admit I usually cheat and buy the pastry ready made when I make tarts!

The pear tart sounds like a lovely idea... don't suppose you have a recipe? I'd probably cheat and buy the pastry too. I hate making pastry! It never goes right.

Ohhh Pavlova - i'd forgotten how much I loved that. Meringue and cream... heaven!

My personal fav is tiramisu. Course not everyone is a coffee fan so you might wanna check that out first.

Baked ricotta ( takes 5 mins to prep and cooks itself in the oven ), but looks and tastes far more impressive with a fruit coulis.

Agreed, I can eat tonnes of the stuff. Really simple to make too. Has to be full fat cheese, mind.

A creme brulee always goes down well, especially with raspberries or passion fruit in the base. Can be prepared the day before and finished off at the last minute. Cool, light, summery and altogether a simple, impressive delight!

Chocolate mouse with fresh strabs is always good. Dead easy as well whip up the double cream, add melted chocolate and fridge, fab

Eton mess? Could even cheat and buy ready-made meringues, if you want to be really lazy!

my fave standby 'cheat's' pud I call my 'almost healthy, sort of trifle'!

You make it thus:
Lay thin slices of Madera cake or, better still, chocolate marble cake in the bottom of a glass bowl.

Drain the juice from a large can of pears in natural juice (not syrup, as all pretense at healthy will disappear!). Pour half of the juice over the sponge in the bowl and allow to soak in for a couple of mins.

Arrange half of the pear slices on top.

Pour over a pot of Muller Light toffee yoghurt.

Repeat the sponge and fruit layers, but this time top with Muller Light bananas and custard yoghurt.

Then top it all with a MLvanilla yoghurt and a dusting of cocoa powder or some shaved chocolate.

The fruits and flavours can be changed to suit, but this combo of pears, toffee and choc works particulary well.

This sounds delicious, just my kind of dessert. I love pears and chocolate, and will definitely be trying this out.

My all time favourite dessert, I'd go with this suggestion OP.

Eton Mess comes a close second.

You should watch This morning right now. It is showing how to make a ginormous cup cake - looks amazing.
