As Planet Of The Dead is the first Doctor Who episode to be released on Blu ray as it is the first HD episode then I assume the remaining specials will be in HD and on Blu Ray. But if they release a specials boxset where would The NExt Doctor fit in. If there is a blu ray boxset would it just be included upscaled or missed out? I assume these episodes will be a seperate boxset and not part of the first Matt Smith series boxset. Or do you think they will only ever be released seperately?

I'd be surprised if they did not release a Specials Box set at some point (though they will of course miss out on the Christmas market) .

Maybe the DVD version will have all 5 Specials on while the BluRay only has the 4 done in HD.

Whilst The Next Doctor wasn't filmed in HD, it can still be put on to a BluRay disc - there would be more than enough room for it, just the visual quality won't be quite to the same standard as the other eps.

This being said, the 2005 Christmas Special was included in the Series 2 boxset. Going by this logic (each boxset starting with the previous year's Christmas Special), surely Xmas 2009's eps should be in the Series 5 boxset?? (although I'd really like a DT Specials boxset...!)

Considering that there are so far two David Tennant's video diaries and two confidentials, both which were not on the vanilla release (or that at least those about The Next Doctor were not on it) I think it's safe to think there will be a box set release with those as extras on it.

Except that the Specials are numbered as part of series 4. So unless they release a new box set for series 4 including the specials, they might be released apart as they are not part of series 5.

Yeah I know what you mean - I'm just saying that if they were to continue in that tradition. Personally I hate it when they release a boxset or CD album and then re-release it with a few extra episodes/features/tracks, so I'm hoping for a Specials Only boxset of Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, Waters of Mars and the Xmas Specials.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping for too. I'm sure the Beeb won't just leave us with the single releases, and give us a good boxset of them all together.

I think we'll get a box set for the specials -hope so ..want the Tennant tapes and other goodies .

The specials will definitely get a boxset. It is essentially the 5th series of new Who and they'll want a DVD release that slots easily in there amongst the rest on people's shelves instead of 5 seperate ones. Blu-ray definitely. The best bet would be to include The Next Doctor in there as a normal DVD, with one Blu-ray disc featuring Planet of the Dead and Waters of Mars, the 2nd Blu-ray having the Christmas episodes on it and maybe a 3rd Blu-ray with extras?

Or perhaps they could do what they did with Lige on Mars and just upscale The Next Doctor?

Don't Blu-Ray discs hold more data than normal DVDs - I don't think three Blu-Ray discs would be needed performingmonk, I reckon the data can fit onto two.

LOL, there's an advert on here for a website selling HD-DVDs! Don't they realise they're discontinued?

2 Specials are about the same length as two movies, so 2 discs could be enough, depending on what extras are included. SD material like The Next Doctor and the Confidentials can be included on a blu-ray with the HD material.

2 specials (1 hour each) are about the same length as one movie (2 hours), so there's more space than you think.

Me too - I'm sure this is what will happen to round off DT's time as The Doctor.

Sorry! Bumping this one!

Just saw on the BBFC website that "DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL [Additional material, XMAS EPISODE 2008] " is listed dated 14/09/09.

Could this be heralding a boxset of the final DT specials??

Would it not say Christmas episodes 2009 if it was the specials box set? There was something on this forum earlier this summer about a The Next Doctor/Planet of the dead double box set to be released in time for the Christmas shoppers to buy ..might be referring to that?

But I do think we'll get news of a box set for the specials soon -hopefully .

It might have made more sense to put The Next Doctor in with the S4 box set, but then I suppose it wouldn't have been available for Christmas. I suppose they could re-release it to include TND, then have a separate BD box set for the 2009 specials.

Just spotted this page
http://astore.amazon.co.uk/dtennant-...ail/B002A9JMY4

Looks like The waters of Mars might be getting a vanilla dvd release which suggests there will be weeks between the screening of The waters of Mars and the Christmas specials?

-though the page has no info at the moment ..

I know there are weeks between.I was just saying that page seems to confirm The waters of Mars won't be shown as part of a trilogy in December close to Christmas.

I've been commenting on that pic on David's forum...all that darkness it looks like they've put poor Ten in the void -horrible.

Pretty sure it's just a temporary cover.. hope so.Don't want my Doctor in the void thank you very much bbc!

LOVEFILM.COM are listing this as a 01/02//09 release date on DVD. No word of a blu-ray which I hope there would be as it was on BBCHD
