Where Can I Buy Buttermilk?
A simple question. I've tried my local Asda tonight as I want some to use in a recipe but they don't sell the stuff and I'm at a loss as to where I can get a hold of it......any suggestions gratefully received.

My mum has been looking for this since christmas! I bought her a bread maker and one of the recipes requires buttermilk. We have tried Asda and Tesco but no luck

ASDA in general do sell it. I saw it the other day in my local ASDA, which although a large store they don't seem to sell the more exotic items that Tesco would, while looking for Live Yoghurt, which doesn't seem to exist anymore. It's all Probiotic now

Get one of these like my granny had with milk straight from the cow you will have top notch buttermilk and the best butter you will have ever tasted

I usually get my buttermilk in Morrisons - it's about 50p for a 284ml carton. You'll find it next to the cream in the dairy section.
I've used the milk and yogurt substitute before... I'm sure I used 5 parts milk to one part natural yogurt, but I do remember that it worked... ![]() http://http://www.cookipedia.co.uk/w...ilk_substitute |

You can make buttermilk by adding lemon juice to milk (I've fogotten the quantity, but it's not much lemon I think) whisking it, and leaving it for half an hour.

I have bought buttermilk in health food stores that have a small section for chilled items.
You can make a good substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of either lemon OR vinegar to a cup of milk (about 250 ml). Stir it in and let it sit for about 5 minutes before using it in recipes. Buttermilk is actually sour milk, so the vinegar or lemon juice will curdle the milk somewhat. That is normal. |

I come from the southern US and we use buttermilk in all kinds of things. It's a staple of southern food. I could never drink buttermilk straight from the jug; but I knew plenty of people who did.
We use buttermilk in cornbread, biscuits (in the US it's more like a savory scone served for breakfast), pancakes, breads, and cakes. It's also used to make certain kinds of creamy salad dressings (like Ranch or Bleu Cheese dressings). And I can't forget one of my favourite desserts: Buttermilk Pie! Mmmmm! It's great served warm with a little whipped cream or ice cream. |
