If it all lies upon the success of S3, then I really hope it does well. It would be awful if they cancelled TW completely!

I do think 5 episodes, no matter how much of an event it will be, is not much of a recomission

I think the bbc have got the move to bbc1 spot on personally i'm loving the idea of a week with Torchwood -really build up the tension and let the bbc1 viewers just joining the series really get to know the show. Then all being well come back to bbc1 again for series 4.

Harry Potter fans are getting a 2-3 hour movie this year, we're getting a 4-5 hour movie, so it's still something to really look forward to.

This was discussed at the time of the announcement - 5 1hr episodes over one single week on the main BBC channel, making a big splash, then (if successful) the move to BBC1 cemented with a proper series (S4).

After all, 5 hrs is better than no hours.

Exactly. I can understand people being disappinted not to get as full series, but I think the move to BBC1 is a real opportunity for the show. After all, how many shows in successive runs have gone from BBC3, to BBC2, to BBC1? I should think this is a first on that front.

It just seems some people are hell bent on being full of doom and gloom on this front, but there is surely little doubt it will get a larger audience through being on BBC1 on five successive days?

I just realised that the title of the episode is a repeat, S1Ep2 was also called "Day One".

We are still getting more than half a series worth of Torchwood if you go by hours and minutes as well as a set of Audio episodes on Radio 4.

I think the new platform of 5 1hr episodes could really work well for Torchwood, as well as possibly attract a larger Audience being that it is on BBC 1, which if it does can only be good for future series.

charlie_coombes - I'm glad to hear that from the screening the episode was excellent, and I can't wait for it to be shown on TV!

I think that would work well regularly. It could be something for people to look forward to every year. Torchwood Week. And it wouldn't require avid fans to watch it every week for 13 weeks...
It's possibly cheaper for the BBC as well. Even though it's more filming time per episode. Although I'm not really sure about costing and stuff, so maybe not.

I got the impression that, if deemed a success, the week-long Torchwood would be a pre-cursor to a full (13-part?) series on BBC1 the next year.

Early reports from the premier of episode 1 have been very positive, with virtually everyone saying that Torchwood is bigger and better than ever, so it looks like the 5-night format will be a success.

Apparently Jack, Gwen and Ianto really gell together as a team of 3 and some of the people who were initially worried about the lack of Owen and Tosh have changed their minds.

It wouldn't be cheaper because in Torchwood and Doctor Who they have episodes which require less costing (Boom Town, Adrift, Midnight) to balance costs out and yet they're still great episodes. I'd prefer a full 13 episode series 4.

Ah okay, fair enough.

Although, was Love and Monsters one of those cheaper episodes?

Either way - everything points to CoE been brilliant.

They weren't originally going to be a team of three, remember Journey's End? Martha and Mickey chasing after Jack? This was supposed to lead to Mickey replacing Tosh and Martha taking over Owen's duties, but filming of Adulthood and Law & Order clashed, so the actors couldn't do Torchwood. RTD had to tear up the scripts and start again! At least that's what it said in the papers...

Martha and Mickey were never going to join the team full-time. Director Euros Lynn has said that they had guest roles only and weren't going to be in all 5 episodes. Basically they were going to be window dressing.

As someone who knows every spoiler for series 3, it's very much focused on Jack, Gwen and Ianto and all the guest characters.

Also, not only does Gwen have to remain the pivital female lead ( Martha wouldn't have fitted in full-time ) RTD has said many times that he has to limit the number of Torchwood and Doctor Who cross-overs because one is a family show and the other a post-watershed show. There's going to be no family edit for series 3, like there was with series 2.

Don't believe everything you read in the tabloid papers.

Presumably TW will only ever crossover with the RTD era of Who, so it may never have another crossover now. Although Matt Smith has apparently said he's like to work with John Barrowman, this would almost certainly be in Doctor Who, not Torchwood (although the Doctor played by David Tennant is in the next Sarah Jane series!)
