PAYG Tariff
I'm currently with Vodafone PAYG and looking to buy a PAYG new phone. Vodafone informed me that top ups under their new PAYG contract expire after 30 days. Trouble is, I rarely use my mobile so a £5 voice top up can last me up to 6 months. Under their new terms (30 day expiry), I'll be wasting money and topping up far more than I need to.
Three were the same as I switched from them for that very reason. Are there any PAYG tariffs that are still truly pay as you go, and don't force the user into using their minutes up within a set time? |

I believe that Asda mobile top ups do not expire as long as you make a call or send a text every 180 days. Asda use the Vodafone network so the SIM should work in your Vodafone handset.
I've ordered a SIM from their website (47p inc delivery) calls are 8p per minute and texts are 4p, very good value for light users. I have an HTC Magic handset at work which is locked to Vodafone, I'll try the Asda SIM in it next week and let you know if it works. HTH. |

Thankfully, I still have my old Smartplus plan from yonks ago (30p a min between 7:30am and 7:30pm, 5p a min other times and all day weekends), along with Stop the Clock (pay for the first three mins during off-peak times, and it's free for an hour after that). If they end that scheme, then I'm off elsewhere. I don't use the phone often enough to justify a contract and I'm not going to pay 20p a min, either. |

Virgin Mobile's PAYG Addict Tariff - T's & C's - You need to use our Services at least once within any 180 day period either by making a chargeable call or sending a text message. If you dont we may suspend your access to the Services and disconnect you from the Network. We dont really want to lose you as a customer so please ensure you keep talking or texting!
If this is the sort of payg tariff that your looking for, I'd advise visiting their website www.virginmobile.com & using the option to check out what the coverage is predicted to be like in the postcode area's that your most likely to use the handset in first. On the homepage, you'll find a section called 'How Do I?' If you select that & then choose the 'Coverage in the U.K' option that you'll find amongst the list on the left hand side of the screen, it'll give you a fair idea of what the coverage may be like. It's also a good idea to ask friends & family members what mobile network they use to see if their Network Provider has a better deal. Hope this will of some help to you whilst your making your choice. |

Thanks guys! It's good to know there are networks out there still catering for v. light users.
I'm actually happy with Vodafone's T&C's that I'm on ( SmartStep plan - 30p for first 3 mins each day, 5p for each min thereafter ) but it's an old plan they don't offer any longer. I just want to update my phone without having to be stuck with using my top up within 30 days! Dumb question time -- 1. If I get a new Vodafone phone, can I just take out the SIM in my existing Vodafone phone and pop it in the new one, and I'll carry on being on the same SmartStep plan? 2. Will doing the above mean I have the same phone number or will it be a new one because of the new phone? |

It won't make any difference what phone you use your SIM in, it's the phone number that's associated with the price plan/deal that you're on.
And the same goes for the number itself - it's associated with the SIM card and will be the same whatever phone it's in. |

As mentioned, you will keep the same number as well as the same plan. The number is aligned with the sim, not the phone.

just had a quick look on the net and it seems all you have to do with o2 is make one chargeable call every 6 months, but i found this on yahoo answers so dont know how reliable it is. |
