Rabbits and Guinea pigs...
xdow
13-06-2009
i let my baby buns, their mum and a level of boar guinea pigs out on the grass this afternoon
so... 5 kits, one doe & three boars.
in the larger part of the garden was a buck, and another boar, as i usually do, separated off from them.

i was re-felting a fixer-upper hutch i'd bought, when i'd done that i came inside for a little while, got myself a drink and went back outside.

to FILTH!

i came back outside and found one of my boars had mounted the rabbit, giving her rock all, and she was presenting herself for him!
it happened twice while i was stood there
i was horrified!
my mother was just laughing and so was my sister, i was there with a broom trying to get him off her!

anyone else had this with any of their animals?
i couldn;t believe it when i saw!

I'm sorry - filth? I think you need to get a grip on reality here.

Also you shouldn't put guinea pigs and rabbits together - ever.

A rabbit can kill a guinea pig with their back leg stamping.

dude, i breed these animals
i never expected i'd find one of each of these humping each other though

you would consider it filthy if you saw a man using his velcro gloves and wellies in a field of sheep, would you not?
same difference.

rabbits and guinea pigs are fine to run together, they don't live together, that i would never do as the hutch is the main place a rabbit will stomp, if they were full sized rabbits, they would not be together, but they're not, they're dwarves.

they actually interact rather well out there and never bother each other, other than this little ding where they've become quite amorous

I know some people have guinea pigs and rabbits in close proximity without problems but I have never risked it after witnessing a half dead guinea pig that was brought into the vets that had been attacked by a rabbit. It was in a terrible state. There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding rabbit and guinea pig care, mostly issued from the likes of certain well known pet shops. Also male rabbits have been known to 'molest' female guineas as the quote from the Rabbit & Guinea Pig Welfare mentions:
'DO NOT under any circumstances house a guinea pig with a rabbit. The two will almost certainly get along for the first few months but when the rabbit reaches sexual maturity it will molest the guinea pig, resulting in injury and even death. Another factor to consider is that rabbits and guinea pigs require different diets.'
To be fair to Xdow, I think this was probably a one off and she does house them separately.

it was the guinea pig molesting the rabbit too, which is what shocked me.

as a rule, i don;t mix my bucks with my guineas, only the doe and kits ever come into contact with them
the bucks are in the paved garden alone, or with a boar or two, but as my females are out in my corale, they never bother with each other

my garden has 13 hutches, sows with sows, boars with boars
each rabbit on their own, unless there's been a litter.

This is good advice, they should never share space.

piggies shouldnt be housed with buns due to the chance of pigs getting respiritory problems from buns, cant remember where i read this, but buns can carry something that can cause problems in pigs. also the kicking can easily kill or harm a piggy, bunnys binkying when happy dont look whos behind them when they kick out. please dont put your buns and pigs together again.

They Don't ****ing Live Together, They Just Run Together.

i'm not going to change the habits of years when i have never had any problems with them other than what is listed above, which is most likely through my rabbit losing her previous litter and being in breeding condition again
