Torchwood - Children of Earth (thumbs up for episode 1)

From the many reports we've seen of the premier of episode 1, it appears Children of Earth is getting a big thumbs up. Apparently the series has really come into its own with the 5-night format and is bigger and glossier than ever on BBC1, with non of the problems seen in the past.

There's a nice mix of the dark and homourus, some great guest characters, big dramatic moments ( especially the climax to episode 1) and personal development for all 3 of the main cast, including growth in the Jack/Ianto and Gwen/Rhys relationships. Apparently Jack, Gwen and Ianto gel really well together as a team and have gotten closer since the end of series 2, with Gwen especially being more professional and grown up than she's been in the past.

a few character spoilers for episode 1 but no major spoilers about the plot

Spoiler
Meeting Jack's daughter Alice and his grandson Steven who's 9 years of age. Apparently Jack had to watch Alice's mother grow old and die. Alice doesn't really like having Jack in her life and especially not Steven's life because she doesn't want Steven to know that his grandfather is immortal. Jack looks after her financially though, as she clearly has quite a bit of money with a nice house etc

We meet Ianto's sister Rhiannon and her family, who live in a rough council estate. It's clear Ianto doesn't see them very often - his young neice and nephew barely look at him when he arrives - but unlike with Alice, Rhiannon does love her brother and wants to know what he's getting up to. Ianto and Rhiannon have a touching conversation about his relationship with Jack, in which he admits that he doesn't know where he stands with Jack. Ianto's family provide a lot of homour in the episode and are very likeable.

Gwen is pregnant, though she doesn't know at the start of the episode and learns about it unexpectedly.

Jack and Ianto's feelings for each other have clearly grown since series 2 but it appears that neither of them have actually talked about their relationship, something which concerns Ianto especially.

Rhys isn't in the first episode very much (he has some nice lines ) but he will become a bigger part of the story from episode 2

Sounds good.

All we need now is for the BBC here to announce officially when it will be transmitted, rather than us having to rely on informed speculation based upon BBC America.

Been reading a few reviews of the episode and skimmed rather regretingly through a scene-by-scene someone posted.

Ianto seems to be intended as the reverse of Bob from RTD's other show Bob and Rose (about an out gay man in love with a woman).

RTD has a habbit of doing that doesn't he? Using elements of his previous work in Who and it's spin-offs.
