Bit of a drop for Emma - 70,000 considering her first three as part of the spice girls sold over a million copies each.

Does anyone know the last time a normal single sold over a million?

I think the last million sellers were 'Evergreen' and 'Unchained Melody'. Before that, it was Kylie's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'

In the year 2002, 226 million albums (value £1.1 billion) were shipped in the UK and 52.6 million singles (value £97million).

That's a ratio of over 4:1 in volume and 10:1 in value. Source: BPI Market Information release number 198, Feb 2003.

Shocking! Makes you wonder why there's all the fuss in the media about singles and even if they will die out completely in a few years

In music the odd bump is okay.

I bumped this thread for 3 reasons:

1. to remind ourselves of some fab tunes from times gone by (Shane Ritchie )

2. To compare how buying of singles has changed and single sales

3. see how the world of music in general has changed

whats your thoughts?

Single sales so much better now. There's is about 7 or 8 songs so far this year that would top the list and we're not in the busy Xmas period yet

I thought they were dying out.

Or is it n
because 2003 was the peak of the limewire era

I only bought 2 of those top 100.

The singles charts have been crap for longer than I thought.

Single sales have ironically gotten stronger (although I can't say much about it in terms of quality imo)... Probably thanks to itunes and amazon. People would much rather spend 79p-99p on a single rather than £1.99 for a song on a cd.

It's amazing how much single sales have increased over the years!!

It's also pretty cool how a lot of the artists in that chart are still big, 8 years later. 50 Cent, Eminem, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, the Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Rowland, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and so on. All still around!

However, it's also shocking how DREADFUL chart music today is in comparison to back then. There's not that many songs nowadays that can really compare to the likes of Ignition, Lose Yourself, Where is the Love? and In Da Club.

Back then people probably looked back at 1998 and said the same thing, and then in a few years you will be looking back at 2011 saying how great it is compared to the dross charting in 2016
