Hi, bit of advice needed. This morning (early) my dog was playing up so I let her out thinking we had intruders, she came running in all excited and when I followed her I found a dead crow. A few feet away caught in the top (strings) of my sons goal was another one. It was still alive so we cut the strings and freed it.

It can stand but not walk very well (tips over onto its beak) after searching the net it seems that it may be a baby although it is very big, they were both found under my one hundred year old poplar tree and may have fallen out of a nest. I can't see any injuries and think it may have shock. I have put it in the bushes under the tree in case its parents come back but am wondering if I need to do anything else.

Any advice would be gratefully received thanks.

I expect you are right ~ the young crow is in shock. Most animals will tend to shut down & play dead when faced with extreme danger from which they can't escape.

If you can leave the young crow in your garden for a while (& keep your dog indoors) then the parents may well try to help the youngster. But if it is too young to fly then the parents will have no choice but to try to feed it on the ground. If this is the case then your dog may have to be kept away until the crow is able to fly away.

You could try leaving a dish of dog food nearby & a bowl of water in case the crow feels brave enough to feed.

Failing that, perhaps you could try ringing a local bird sanctuary for advice. Most times the advice is to leave well alone to allow the parents to help it but if it is injured or can't fly & the parents abandon it, then you may have to take it to a local rescue or sanctuary.

If possible I would try to put it up in the tree rather than under it. Easier for the parents and safer from your dog.

Same thing happened at my Mum's house a couple of weeks ago. RSPB said to leave it in a quiet corner as the parents would probably come down & feed it ... which they did. They chased away all the neighbourhood cats & made sure the baby was safe & fed. He kept stretching his wings out as if he was practising for flying & after about 3 or 4 days ... off he went! Nice to have a happy ending! I hope your crow gets one too!

Funnily enough I met a lady yesterday evening while walking the dogs who also has rescued a crow. She thinks it's an injured adult as it's looks fully grown but is limping. She's put it in her conservatory & is feeding it with dog food, meal worms, mince, cheese, biscuits etc. She said it apears to be very tame & after a couple of days she let it out into her garden but it was still limping & hopped straight back into her conservatory.

She said she's grown quite attached to it now & it will let her stroke it & hand feed it & it makes a sort of purring noise when it's happy. Today she's going to leave her conservatory doors open to see if it will fly away but it seems quite happy to stay where it is! No doubt this crow knows when its on to a good thing!

A few years ago there was a crow outside my house, hopping around with an apparent broken wing....I phoned the RSPB, who said if I could contain it, they would come to collect it..
So I went out to try and catch it, all well and good, except I have a phobia of birds..so everytime I got near it, panicked and ran away again.
After an hour, my neighbour,who'd be watching, very amused through the window, came out with a large laundry basket to help me catch the poor thing, and we spent the next two hours trying to get the basket over the crow...missing everytime, and attracting a small crowd.

Suddenly the crow straightened his crocked wing, had a little flap......and flew quite easily up to the rooftops and away

I haven't got any advise to give you, salsameg, but wanted to say, well done for helping the poor little thing, I hope his parents find him and he is ok

Thanks for the advice everyone, the parents came back late yesterday. The baby still was falling over when it tried to walk so at 10pm last night we put a laundry basket over it with a brick on top as we have lots of foxes in our area at night.
This morning parents were still around so I let it out and it seemed much better, was walking fine. They are still in the bushes at the bottom of the tree so I will let nature take it's course, hopefully my dog's presence will keep the cats away although she likes cats, birds, hedgehogs etc and chases nothing except a ball.

Found out crows often push the babys out up to ten days before they can fly, hope that next time the crows build the nests lower than the 35 feet plus that they did this time as I'm sure that my sons netting on his goal saved this one, it's sibling wasn't so lucky.

At work yesterday a baby crow was wandering around the car park to young too fly but too agile to help (kept hopping away)

Hopefully he will make it. I quite like crows despite their record with Lambs.

Years ago we had one that when the wind blew open the buildings swing doors would come in hop about for 5 mins and then caw until let out

I love crows too ~ they're very intelligent birds & extremely protective over their young. When I walk my dogs in the park very early in the morning I get followed round by several crows. It started because I used to throw a couple of gravy bones to the crows, then they started to follow me & shout for their biscuits. Then I stopped buying dog biscuits because one of the dogs was on a diet but I felt bad that I didn't have any food for the crows. So now I take cubes of mature cheddar to the park with me for the crows. Now the magpies have cottoned on to the fact that I have food with me but the crows very quickly see off the magpies & seagulls.

I saw a programme a while ago on crows in Japan. The crows want to eat a particular variety of nut that has a very hard shell. They have learned to take the nuts to a pedestrian crossing, wait till the light turns red, then they put the nuts on the crossing & fly up to a look-out post. When the lights turn green, the cars run over the nuts & break them. Then when the lights turn red again, the traffic stops & the crows collect the nuts from the broken shells ~ how clever is that.

I've seen similar prog where they've been left with nuts or some food in a container that will only release the nuts if a rod is inserted. They worked out how to do this pretty quickly. They are renowned for their intelligence as well as their ability to mimic voices. They are often kept as pets.

They also have a creepier reputation too as apparently they will appear before and after someone dies. They are often called the grim reaper bird.

In that case, there's going to be a mass slaughter in my back garden - we live in an area that's well known for its crow and rook population!

I have several bird feeders in the garden, and the crows are too big to sit on them to get food. They (and the wood pigeons) have figured out how to get seed out of the hopper by knocking it so the seed falls to the ground, but they couldn't get at the suet balls. I watched them for ages one afternoon, they all sat around on the grass looking at the feeder, and eventually they sent a younger and smaller crow up to see what he could do, but they've never worked it out yet. The squirrels are much better at it!
