been given a budgie...

as the title says really, not sure how to go about it

i came in from college at about 5pm this evening, sat down for a little while, there was a knock at the door, bloke from over the road saying he'd found a budgie this morning, hand tame, he walked straight up to it & picked it up
came over and asked us if we'd take it as he didn;t have any feed for it
since we have a pair, we took it in

i put together a spare hamster cage, sorted out a couple of makeshift perches, sand paper, grit, sand in the bottom water and food out in there for it, sorted.

what do we do now?
do we advertise him, as he's quite obviously been well looked after, being tame and all
thing is, how do we go about it?
anyone could call up, how would we be able to tell if he was their bird or not?

he also has runny poo, could this just be due to the fact it's probably not had any feed in a while?
(as soon as he was in our cage he started eating and didn't stop for a good log while)

I would put up posters on posts, plus in the local paper shops. Also tell the police you have him plus rescue centres, if the owner is keen to see it again they may well cover all avenues. I'd write the poster saying 'budgie found' and the area. Don't give details of the bird though, then when anyone gets in touch, you can ask them the sex, colours etc, to check for sure.

It's lucky to have been rescued by you. Good luck with the search.

I'd also contact local vets and perhaps even the police to advise them - just incase the owner has already reported it missing.

Stress can give them the runs.

Do you have a local animal shelter who would have him? All my budgies are rescue strays from our local rspca.

well, we've given the local rspca details of the bird if anyone enquires, but we are happy to keep him if no one comes forward for him
he is a very nice bird.

and yeah i kinda figured it would be stress with him, he's calmed down a lot now an become a bit less watery
