Please identify hilarious John Peel favourite

I can't believe intensive Google searches have failed to come up with any information on a song that John Peel used to play frequently on his show.

It was one he took a liking to in the same way as the Undertones 'Teenage Kicks' in that he used to give it extra plays.

It was a quirky mickey-taking song done with an exaggerated american accent (by an american band). I can't find my only source of it which was a cassette tape recorded from the radio lol.

I had thought it was titled somewhere along the lines of 'Things That Made The US Great' (or america?). However, the fact that i don't get a hit from Google is casting a doubt on that.

Lyrics that i can remember are similar to the following bits,

The main repetitive line with the object word being different each time was,

'Hell we gave you (insert word here) and it was a great (whatever), that's because it was an american (whatever) it was a great american (whatever)'

Other lines towards the end of the song with the intensity of the voice increasing were,

'Hell that's because we're american people, we're great american people'

The last line was,

'We gave you Oppenheimer and he gave you the bomb, hell it was an american bomb, it was a goddamn great big american bomb and we're all gonna get blown to s***'

Possibly "American Bomb" by the Exploding F*ck Dolls?

Can't find the lyrics on the net.

The human brain is an amazing thing. I've spent the last two years trying to recall this song and.....bizzarely the name of the artist just sprung to mind.

It was Jeb Loy & The Oil Wells....which enabled me to re-google and find out the song was called...big fanfare...

Things That Made U.S.

I'll be back with the very witty lyrics later (lol) as stunningly it is available on Amazon MP3 download amongst other places. Uh oh just noticed it's Amazon.com and priced in dollars, hope i can order it from them?. Got to rush out right now.

EDIT:

Yessss! just re-re-googled with results limited to UK and Amazon UK have it. A reviewer says this about the compilation album it is on,

If one track ever merited buying an album this could be it., and I'll probably get the CD just for track 10:"Things that made US - Jeb Loy & The Oil wells" Everyone I've played it to loved it. It slaps the biggest wet fish on the face of American imperialism I have ever had the pleasure to hear.'

Not so amazing that you didn't forget it for 2 years, though!

Well done.

You have to appreciate that the song is sung with an exaggerated 'full of pride' and boastful texas accent.

Should there be any former John Peel listeners at the time of the record (20 years ago now lol) reading this, the lyrics would certainly jog your memory of the way it was performed.

'America is a great nation,
And i'm gonna tell you what made America a great nation,
I'm gonna go into great detail,
To tell you why America is a great nation,
And it is a great nation.

Hell it's great because we gave you Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Superman,
And Spiderman and Charlie's Angels and Lieutenant Kojak,
And the Lone Ranger and his token injun Tonto,
Hell look at the things that made America a great nation,
These are the things that gave us our inspiration,
And made us a great nation.

We gave you Captain Kirk and the Starship Enterprise,
And Sammy Davis Junior,
And Marie Osmond, Doris Day and Coca Cola and Colonel Sanders,
We gave you Elvis Presley, skyscrapers, rock and roll,
And we put the first goddamn man on the goddamn moon,
Hell just look at the things that made America a great nation,
These are the things that gave us our inspiration,
And made us a great nation.

Hell there's, hell there's, Jack Nicklaus and Wolfman Jack,
And John Travolta who taught you all to goddamn dance so good,
And chewing gum and polyester, every form of goddamn music,
Neil Diamond and Ronald Reagan,
Hell even our black people are great people,
That's because they're american people,
They're great american black people.
I'm gonna give you some more goddamn good reasons why we are a great country.

We gave you the biggest goddamn army in the goddamn world,
And it's an American army, it's a great army,
It's a great American army that carries the prettiest goddamn flag in the goddamn world, Old Glory,
And we gave you a great american , we gave you Oppenheimer and he gave you the bomb,
And it was a great american bomb, it was a goddamn atom bomb,
And we even tested the goddamn thing for you, extensively, extensively,
Using great american planes, great american pilots,
And the great american people who financed the goddamn thing,
And if they did it once, s**t, they can do it again.

We got a great american in the White House,
We got a great american workforce and together we can do it again,
Better than before nothing stands in our goddamn way,
The great american goddamn way,
And we're gonna build a bigger bomb, a better bomb,
A better american bomb, laser beams,
Great american goddamn laser beams,
And America ain't gonna let you down,
We ain't gonna stop, we gonna get all blown to s**t the american way,
Our president's gonna spend all the money on goddamn Wall Street,
And we're all gonna get blown to s**t, you better believe me,
I know you all gonna get blown to f***.'
