I don't get this idea that the BBC is on a dumbing down mission - it may be trying to compete with all the other TV channels, but it still produces the best TV imho. Budgets are being cut all over so certain types of show like period drama no doubt will suffer, but it was always the poor relation. Plenty of drama shows have just been announce this week that look pretty good to me.
Even going by what is on TV now though, if we take Sci-fi drama - Torchwood, Dr Who and Being Human are three examples of fantastic shows on the BBC. None of the other terrestrial channels have come even close to producing anything as good - Primaeval is such a poor relation.
The BBC has four good TV channels all clearly aimed at certain types of viewers (BBC3 is still a bit rough but getting there).
ITV has three channels and ITV2 shows mainly recent repeats and ITV3 shows mainly old repeats.
C4 is like ITV with its E4 and More 4 except it tries to offer cutting edge, less traditional TV but often ends up producing sensationalist programmes aimed to shock.
And C5 hangs in there with soaps that the others no longer want and a few good shows amongst quite a bit of car crash TV.
I think the BBC is still well worth the licence fee and I don't feel I only have dumbed down TV shows to choose from.
Why would Bruce, Len, Brendan, Anton and Erin leave guaranteed work with unbeatable exposure in the current economic climate? Surely there should be better quality celebs rather than zedlebs available at the moment?
Just my opinion of course.
