Jeremy Brett was the greatest Doctor we never had.

Died before his time. Didn't quite get to complete all the Holmes either.

Seems as though any actor who was good as Holmes would have been good as the Doctor.

Jack Macgowran and Patrick Magee would of been brilliant.

Ralph Richardson

Don't believe me? Check out his turn in 'Time Bandits'!

Frankie Howerd as the Doctor, and a very glamorous lady assistant. Can you imagine the side-remarks to camera

Well, yes he is dead but 20 years before Doctor Who aired. He did have a son and a brother though.

Alastair Sim, Hugh Griffith and Leo McKern would of been good as well.

Then there's also all those actors who where actually considered for the role: Cyril Cusack, Alan Webb, Leslie French (1st Doctor), Rupert Davies, Valentine Dyall, Michael Hordern, Patrick Wymark (2nd Doctor), Michael Bentine, Fulton Mackay, Richard Hearne (4th Doctor) and Ken Campbell (7th Doctor).

Ian Marter (bless him - he died too young!).
He would have made a dashingly English Doctor, like a young Pertwee.

Interestingly, Leslie Howard's son played Sherlock Holmes in what I think was perhaps a Canadian series.

Macnee is still alive.
