I think the main reason he would have told River about Donna, is because he knew she was going to meet her at the Library.....

But I would like to think that since meeting SJS in SR, he has gone on to never forgetting his companions and mentioning them.....Rose in series 3, and Martha occasionaly in series 4....and as we know in the Next Doctor, and POTD he mentions Donna....in all but name...

Are you suggesting that maybe
Spoiler
Donna regenerates? And River may well be Donna, but without Donna's memories? Or that Donna DIES?
I've spoiler tagged it in case I'm proved right.

After watching SITL again tonight i'm even more sure River knows something about Ten and Donna and ..

Spoiler
we are to see the Noble's Christmas this year according to Doctor Who Magazine 408 ..

Also something else I was thinking .. it might be Rose's Doctor who tells River the Doctor's name because it is also his name ..?

Hmmm- my way of thinking too - but probably unlikely

Well she could

Spoiler
die

I guess. But in no way wasI thinking any of your other suggestions might happen. Those are the kind of things that make me roll my eyes when I read them on forums.

Spoiler
Donna does have Time Lord DNA remember, that's why The Doctor had to erase her memory, so it didn't overload her brain and cause her to "burn up" - the regen graphic is the Time Lord burning up as their body changes. Also, River's death could've killed The Doctor outright, with no regeneration, so it is possible.
But it was only a suggestion, I know no more than anyone here, unless we have insiders among us. Anyway, I bet Donna's fate and any revelations about River will be completely different to anything suggested here.

River seemed to expect Ten to recognise her, so surely she must either have met Ten or know she is going to meet Ten in that incarnation... Say Eleven was the current incarnation when she firsts meets the Doctor in her personal timeline and he shows her a picture of Ten. If she later meets Ten for the first time, she wouldn't expect him to know her as he is an earlier incarnation of "her" Doctor (Eleven) so would have no memory of her. That made me think that in her personal timeline, she has met Ten at least once (even if that were in the future of the Doctor's personal timeline at the point of SITL/FOTD...)

OK, none of that makes the sense it does in my head! Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey makes my brain spin...

Please feel free to set me straight! ”

Of course she had met Doc#10, I really don't know how some people can't see this.

If she had only seen a picture of #10 as some suggest and knew he was a previous incarnation of her Doctor why does she try to match up what encounters they have had together, Why does she tell him that it's early days in their relationship for him?

If the only history she had with 10 was seeing a photo she would know that they never had any encounters and that he would have no idea who she was.

except she could think that this version of the doctor is doctor 12/13/14 and the list goes on. Regeneration baby. what she was trying to ascertain was whether they had already met and he had regenerated since...

or whether he was telling the truth and had no idea he was sending her there.

that makes far more sense to me. if she is think ing but last week went to the lost moon of Poosh and he does n't remember implies that in her time line she is ahead.

she has met the doctor in the future in another incarnation and thinks the doctor she meets in the library has regenerated from her doctor.

hence his eyes look younger than her doctor but somehow he seems older. it confuses her. she doesn't recognise him like we woud by sight alone. it's more than that instinct, attitude bravado. an poss she can sense Time lord?

Only Time Lords recognise each other after one of them has regenerated, so unless my earlier theory is right, she didn't recognise him that way. Maybe a future Doctor looks similar to David Tennant? You get lookalikes and dopplegangers in reality, so why not a Time Lord whose regen looks like a previous incarnation.

Thanks Corwin - that is exactly how I see it, but you have managed to be shorter and more to the point than my ramblings were.

I am sure in my head that at some point she meets Ten, but I don't really expect the story to be told in the specials.

I definitely agree with that.....

Like it was mentioned....the mystery part of River is good, and adds to the story of the library to parter.....so it will be good if they never bring her back, and never really show how and when River first meets him.....

Perhaps Moffat should give a plot outline to someone for a book.

I think we'll see her in the specials personally -theres so much evidence that we will and her reactions to Ten and Donna were so personal. And personally I like the idea that SM might have wrote in a major specials character for his last story for David- his contribution to David's and RTD's farewell .. I think that would be nice ..

I also hope we'll see her because FOTD is a unsatisfying ending imo much as I love that two part story ..

But we shall see it's all just a scenario ..we know nothing about the Christmas specials and that in itself is such good work from the bbc ..

For me...I wouldn't say it was an unsatisfying ending....but more of a strange twisted happy ending....well at least in Moff's eyes it probably was a happy ending, but living forever in a virtual world may not be everyones cup of tea...

Anyway...I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this matter...because i love that some stories are untold...like that of the Time War, the Doctor's name, the Doctor's encounter with Queen Elizabeth I....and so on...it creates a mythology and mystery.....and to see all that will take it away...and the results will probably be very underwhelming.....

But's just me.....

Hmm... surely the Time War will be Paul McGann's final storyline on the audios? Won't they be able to use new series elements next year, since the TV series will have entered another new era?

I am with you on this too Corwin, it was obviously not everyones cup of tea at the time that he blatently had a lover, if not a wife in River Song, but I absolutely loved it, especially that she knew who he was but he had no clue. And their easy rapport was a joy.

I hope we do see their first meeting in one of the earlier specials and then their remaining encounters play off screen and maybe are mentioned by the new incarnation. It doesn't all have to be on screen for it to happen but I would like a glimpse!

Not necessarily the 11th Doctor, just a future incarnation.
