I remember being in school in the 90s and everyone loved Eternal, they were huge!!!

What im wondering is why, when talking about all the great british girlbands, is eternal constantly left out in the cold??

Surely they have to be one of the best british girlbands, especially in terms of vocal ability and success, not only in the Uk but elsewhere.

The shifted in excess of 10 million albums and had 15 consecutive top 20 hits, with one huge number 1, "I wanna be the only one".


So why are they never mentioned at all?

I'm not sure why exactly it is you feel like Eternal are always forgotten. I remember them and sure many others do. Quite liked them, wasn't a big fan or anything, did buy the Don't You Love Me cd single. Intro to that is a-mazing though, i agree.

I think its just the nature of being in a pop group, where you have your years in the limelight and then disappear/split up etc to make way for the next big thing. The same will happen with the big girl groups of the present day, Girls Aloud, The Saturdays etc. In ten fifteen years they'll be nothing but a nice nostalgia trip for old fans. I wont mention the Sugababes LOL because they probably will still be around in fifteen years after about twenty more line up changes

Agreed OP, they did very well considering it was a pre-Spice era. Like I've mentioned numerous times, each member could sing and had some personality.

But I think what let some people down in their early years, was that none of the songs apart from 'So Good' were written by any of the girls.

They're so effortlessly overshadowed by Vanilla.

I loved Eternal, went to see them in concert back in the day and they were fab! Oh baby I and I am blessed are beautiful songs.

"Stay" was a quality song and still sounds quite fresh today.Did Louise ever have a solo bit in any of their songs? Esther has a great voice but it was also kind of strange for a girlgroup to have one singer sing the lead on every single song when you look at Spice Girls, TLC, Destiny's Child, Sugababes, etc... who all shared vocals at some point.

I think they have a pretty american feel to them, maybe thats why people forget them.

They weren't unlike En Vogue.

That said, after the Bangles, they are my favourite girlband ever.

I loved Eternal. Their 'Greatest Hits' album was one of the first CDs I remember ever buying (from Boots!). I remember liking their fashion sense as well as their music; they never used sex to sell themselves and were clean cut without being preachy or silly about it. They just dressed like nice, classy women. I miss that type of look in the music industry today.

A lot of their songs are still genuinely good. My favourites have always been "Save Our Love", "Angel of Mine" and "Don't You Love Me" but I don't think there are any Eternal songs I dislike.

To put it simply, they were overshadowed by the Spice Girls. If anyone thinks of girl groups the first act they would think about is them. Plus, they were part of whole pop culture of the 90s. Eternal, whilst successful in their own right weren't a worldwide phenomenon, although they probably had better songs and better singers.

Plus, their most memorable song was a number 1 hit - and the general public probably don't remember anything else after that. They seemed to just fizzle out very quietly towards the end of the decade. I'm sure a lot of people didn't even know they released another album in 1999 as a two-piece.

I remember their attempt at keeping the Eternal brand going as a two-piece and me at the time being underwhelmed and losing interest. They managed to survive without Louise but when the other girl (I've forgotten her name) left as well the spark wasn't there anymore and it was clear they'd had their time.

They were a really lovely band in their prime but the way they just sort of faded away felt very natural. They were a product of the 1990s and just weren't going to fit in in any other era.

I know what u mean about them being forgotten about, ppl name the Spice Girls, All Saints, B*Witched, Cleopatra, Destiny's Child, TLC, Sugababes, Atomic Kitten, Mis-teeq PCD and Girls Aloud - but the reason i think this is , is because like sum1 said earlier, the first girl group u think of from the 90s is the Spice Girls and then u start thinking of the next girl group that came after hence All Saints etc etc.

Eternal were huge in the early mid 90s but yes they were completely overshadowed by the Spice Girls as were other girl bands with alot of potential like N-Tyce and Solid HarmoniE.

Many ppl under 18 dont even know who Eternal are - they know Louise Redknapp but had no idea she was in a girl band

The two piece Eternal just didnt work, Plus I think Easther and Vernie burnt their bridges with how they treated Kellie Bryan - Kellie found out she was no longer in Eternal when she read it in the newspaper. I think that turned alot of ppl away from Eternal because it was quite heavily publicised in the newspaper

That's one thing I miss about girlgroups from the 90s. They had a very raw look going on, without it looking amateur and homemade.

I know. I think talent before image was still more accepted back then. The media hadn't become as reliant on using sex to get people's attention as it is today. Even other bands like All Saints and the Spice Girls were not as oversexed as bands like the Pussycat Dolls are today.

A very late reply but Louise sang solo on 'Crazy' in which they all got a solo bit. Hers was the first verse!

A truly tremendous group, very talented bunch of singers. I still have their greatest hits on my Ipod, got to admit that 'Stay' is my favourite song from them. Louise was the weakest of singer in the group who then left to pursue a solo career and did fairly okay. Not sure about the circumstances in which Kellie Brian left, but subsequently I think got married and divorced (not sure) to Shane Lynch from Boyzone and appeared on that awesome show called Celebrity Love Island lol . As a 2 piece they released 'Watcha gonna do' and then petered out gradually. I do recall Ester releasing a single with Aswad covering 'Shy Guy' by Diana King (Bad Boys 1 Soundtrack) in a very reggae style. A couple of years ago I was getting so excited when a 90s nostalgia concert was announced featuring Eternal and others (Mark Morrison, Lighthouse Family, Boyz II Men, Dina Caroll) but that got cancelled. Would have loved to have seen them in concert. I really digged their cool vibe and soulfulness.

I adored Eternal. Amazing group. I really must get around to re buying their greatest hits.
