In my opinion, one of thebest and most influential musicians of the last 30 years.

Been looking up reviews of his appearance at the Isle of Wight festival where he closed the festival and read a lot of reviews saying that a lot of people had left prior to his appearance and that the field was half empty etc..

Maybe the music was not mainstream enough for some?

Great artist, great song-writer, great musician, great songs, vastly under-rated.

Why do the majority of people class good music on the amount of radio play reieved etc without going out and listening to real music?

The amount of 'manufactured' pop music becoming successful these days is embarassing.

Why don't people see that the music chosen by radio stations isn't nescessarily the best available?

Neil Young is an absolute legend and has been incredibly influencial on generations of musicians. Would love to see him live myself but have never had that chance to date - I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I don't think he is the right sort of person to headline a family friendly festival such as the Isle of Wight. Also he was on too late for lots of people who had to go home (the local people) for work or school the next day. You are right about the audience disappearing though.

Thousands of people went on the Saturday just to see Will Young!

I never understand why they put the "headliner" on the Sunday night rather than the Saturday.

As a radio presenter myself I'm not aware of too many people who would agree with this. Luckily, the radio station I work for has a very wide playlist - unlike some stations where they only seem to play the same 10 songs!

I agree. Also the general consensus of the people I was with was that it was a bit too mellow to close the festival with, though admittedly we only watched him for a while. Personally I was quite enjoying it but we've had the Stones and the Police the last 2 years and the atmosphere this year didn't compare.

I think it will be a different story at Glastonbury though. For example some hitchhikers we picked up mentioned that they weren't sticking around to see him because they'd catch him at Glasto.

I like his song Philadelphia that is played at the end of the film of the same name.

The main reason was that the IW Council always want the Sunday concert to finish at 11pm and the fireworks are at about 10.45. So he was on much earlier than the ITV people anticipated (their fault I imagine) and by the time they got round to him it was all over.

My son was at the front of the stage for all the music acts at the Isle of Wight festival last weekend. He said Neil Young was absolutely brilliant. He did an acoustic set and a rock set playing from 9.30 until 11.50. Look at at this You Tube clip - the crowd was loving it.

I don't really know much by Neil Young if I'm to be honest, but Keep On Rocking In The Free World is an absolute classic.

That sounds more like it. So it all finished before 11pm as I said above. ITV2 are at fault having the programme last too long.

Yep they were faffing about showing acoustic sets and rubbish messing around with buggies pretending to be the Red Arrows, and in the background we could hear Neil playing Grrrr! Saying we are going to see Neil Young later (they didn't seem to know he finished before their programme did). They should have just shown him live and stop playing God and saying we will be back later to see him. ITV2 are at fault yes.

It certainly was not due to the lack of crowd as you can see by the You Tube vid above.

I'm going to see him next weekend in Hyde Park...I'm really looking forward it.

I've seen him a few times over the years and it's always a good mix of accoustic tunes and out and out rockers.

I cherrypick his ouevre somewhat, and am particularly partial to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Trans.

On the official Isle of Wight Festival forum today John Giddings has said the reason why tv footage was not shown is because Neil Young said he did not want to be broadcast - the first artist ever!

Someone told me that the story about NY not wanting it filmed was abslutely true and anyway it was extremely boring with interminable guitar solos!

Took a few songs to get going but then 'Cortez the Killer' and a few acoustic numbers....amazing. Uknown Legend and soaring guitar jams on Down by the River and Rockin in the Free world.

Could easily have stood there all night watching the band jamming...

Just saw his footage from Glasto .... fantastic

The bits of Neil Young's Glasto set I saw on TV were brilliant, Words and Rockin' In The Free World, fantastic!

I enjoyed the bits I saw too. Distinctive vocals, and totally giving 100% and some more.

If I was at Glastonbury he would have been a must see, as would the other Mr Young tomorrow

What a legend the man is. He's a bit like the mad Uncle you keep locked in the attic, but he is a unique talent, and one of the all time greats. I loved what I saw of him at Glastonbury.
