Vol Au Vents
adamand
20-06-2009
Hello All,

Off to a picnic tomorrow to celebrate bf's sisters 40th birthday and have got to take some food. I was thinking of making some sausage rolls, scotch eggs and vol au vents. Anyone got any interesting ideas for vol au vent fillings? I have hunted the internet but most of the ones I can find seem a little boring.

Spinach and feta
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/d...ipe/index.html (not vol-au-vents, but would work with them, like the other recipes).

Leek mousse. I've made this but can't find the recipe I used. It was lovely, though and here's one recipe:

Chicken in cream sauce is yum in vol-u-vents, what is also nice is a cheddar cheese sauce bound with an egg with wee bits of smoked ham in it, both of these need baked obv.

Haven't seen one for years, but bloody love them - especially when you've had a few drinks. You can stick anything you like in a vol au vent. I love tuna and mayo. Also try chilli con carne. My rule of thumb is if it can go in a sandwich or on a potato it will go in a vol au vent.

144 by tomorrow! you'll want some quickie ideas too then how about: Cottage cheese and pineapple, cheese savoury (grated cheese, chopped pickled onions and mayo), honey mustard chicken, avocado and lime (add chillies for kicks!), ham and coleslaw, bacon and egg mayo and cream cheese with strips of smoked salmon on top.

The cottage cheese ones sound yummy. (they all do actually).

Am I the only one who liked vol-u-vents with hot fillings rather than cold? I have never had tuna mayo or ham and coleslaw, always chicken in sauce or ham and cheese sauce... nice cold too.

No, I prefer hot fillings, too. Creamed mushrooms is my favourite.

I've never had hot ones - might have to give them a go. My brothers always insist on voluvents for xmas, so always looking for new filing ideas (though if I stray too far from the norm they start moaning that they don't like 'fancy stuff'!! )

I apologize if his is late but if anyone else wants some a great one we used to do in the reasturante was as follow:

Fry off some mushrooms, chicken and bacon and then let them cool, mix in some mayo and some wholegrain mustard and the fill.

Then put a tiny but of chppe rocket on top of each.

Sound like a random combo but it us devine!!

Snails are my favourite covered in garlic butter.

It is funny to see people's faces when you tell them what they thought was so delciious and then so revolting the next moment!
